D fin templates.

thanks to cookie monster

…ambrose…

the best prep for shaping

d fin is eat a cookie.

what the hellll was that hahahaha

ill scan my template today, pm me

I had hoped you would enjoy a little levity.

I always enjoy a good scribble when doing a fin template

photos will reveal the front line of contemporary8’'longboard

fins and use the front line reversed and repeated for trailing edge

is the basic construct for a broad wariety of d fins

the narrower the base the more trunkated it’s more like a late 50s hobie

the alonger the base the more klunky

edwards2.jpg

this was called a reverse finbecause of the straight line nature of the leading edge.

it still looks pretty D shaped…

this bill thrillkill rendition is a far cry from the original isn’t it…

finoffset2.jpg

repeat this front line on the trailing edge  it gets a lot of area

make a straight line connection with tip to back end of base it looks like a hansen fin…

finoffset.jpg

kinda looks like a yater 4-d

phil edwards like 1967

same lines just cut out trailing edge

getting the drift?

tried to get some archive leverage

went to cooperfish and austin surfboards no pictures

I think you can do it if yo get some pre 1966 surf magazine photos

every company tweeked their templates a little

rainbow fin from their catalogueD-fin is an oversimplification…

…ambrose…

ive been looking for more pictures and I am getting sleepy…

g-night my clock says 254am.

Hi - PM me your email address and I can send a tracing from an early 60s Hobie fin.

Thanks Guys thanks for your help, got plenty of good options to choose from.

Zac

please post up what you end up making eh zac ?

I'd be interested to see it !

  cheers

  ben

shall do chip, havent done a fin before, should be fun.

Do you have any idea what the foil is like on a d-fin, does it just taper from thicker at the front to thinner at the back ???

on this one [but maybe it's a 'keel' ?  ] it was super thin throughout ...slightly thicker on the leading edge , yes ..

if you get a chance , maybe check out some of the clubbies' " paddle boards " , at the south newport clubhouse [IS it still there ?] ...they often have a sorta 'd' fin , on some of theirs ??

  cheers  zac !

[img_assist|nid=1064889|title=First Attempt|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=424|height=640]Hey Chip here was my first attempts, really had no idea where to start or what to do, just tried to look at my other fins and copy their shape, the small side bite turned out perfect but ive found it quite hard to match two fins.

Going to keep making some other D-Fins until i think it looks right, the one pictured has a large flat spot which i could imagine wont bode well.

good on ya zac !

and , welcome to fin land ....

every body here needs to go 'there' at least ONCE in their board making lives !  [so they have done the 'whole' process , and to get an appreciation of the work involved , too...especially making FIBREGLASS fins !]

 cheers !

nice zac

OK Zack... took me awhile to get a photo of my D fin but here it is.

1/8" G-10 with 3/16" balsa on each side (makes it easy to shape).  I add 1/8: G-10 on each side of the base to make the width for the box.

I got the temp. from Ian.  It was a full D Fin I just couldn't make myself do it that way...the cut away works GREAT!!!  Full hold but turns nice!

Les

Looks great Les, reminds me of those greenough squirrel fins. [img_assist|nid=1064954|title=D Fin|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=427]
Heres an update of the fin, will hopefully get around to shaping his board in the next few days, will post some photos up of the fin once weve glassed it on… Hes Stoked ! thanks for all your help, with your templates.
Zac

From your last shot it looks like you need to foil the fin a bit more... from 25% (or there abouts) back looks like it needs to progressively thin out.

OR...it could just be the shot and it's an optical illusion.  Some where on here is a pic of the optimal shape and where to put the wide point.  As I remember, at 25% you get good control and at 30% you get more speed.

Les

Hey Zack,

Looking good man. So good on you to make the fin and then shape the board.  What’s the plan to enhance the fin shape with the planshape?

Also you can add some more foil shape by building up the glass. layer it in steps to make the flat spot a “high” spot creating a little more foil. But if not it will still work with flat sides. D fins are like anything else…there’s lots of ways to do them and each makes some performance difference. But in general they are for drag…to slow down the tail…

Consider tail shape, Bottom rail shape, concave nose (or not), tail rocker (biggie if you ask me). To Vee or not to Vee…Ha! Ha!

Looking at your other boards I think you’re the right guy for sure to experiment with these fins.  You might want to google the opinions of some of the more noteable LB noserider shapers and riders “Noserider surfboard design”. A lot of people think that D fins are junk. I think they just haven’t done the research…

Hey Woody heres some progress on the board/fin, as you can see we went for a pretty typical nose-rider design this one being 9’6’’ by 23 1/4 wide. You can see some of my doodads with the template in the tail but just gunna leave it as it is.
I think the D-Fin you sent me will compliment it quite nicely ( lots of drag, better nose riding as you say) . The initial fin we made, looked way to small when we placed it on the tail, think i must have printed the template out in the wrong scale [img_assist|nid=1064966|title=DFin #2|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=640|height=427], Gives me another chance though to get the fin looking better, was going to try foil this one with a greater thickness in the front with more taper to the back, like a tom wegener fin .

In regards to the boards design i was also thinking of just a straight flat bottom, 50/50 rails with possibly some dull edge in the rear starting at the fin/. Will definatley shape some tail rocker in, i feel its a good quality on almost every board.
[img_assist|nid=1064965|title=Longboard Outline|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=427|height=640]

P.s where should i lay the fin out on the board (on the tail or a few inches up)  ??
