Hi there. I own this board (bad:-) picture attachted) It is made by Rip Curl and it looks like its made of wood or at least some of it. I don’t find any information about it on the web. I ilve in Switzerland, where I bought it of a guy who says he bought in Australia but I don’t know where, when and how much it costs. Since I couldn’t find it on e-bay or any other plarform I thought it might be rare? Can anybody tell me more about my board? It is in perfect condition, I think it has never been used.
In this case, a “store prop” would be a board built to hang on the wall of store. Could be the case, but it’s a functional looking board. I could be wrong, but it looks like it’s veneer over a foam core.
Just because it is built like a board that’s meant to be ridden, that does not exclude it from being a store prop. Unlike Hollister, Rip Curl is an actual surf brand and they could not pass off some bogus surfboard lookalike as the real thing.
I agree with surfthis. It is most likely a foam core (EPS) with a veneer skin. Probably made in Asia, like the wood veneer Surftechs.
Some of the coolest boards ever were store props by the way. What makes me think this board is a store prop is the Rip Curl logos.
You’d see boards like this one in shopping malls across the USA back in the 1980s. They’d be in stores that sold the Op line of clothing which was hugely popular for a time.
OP started as a Surfboard company by Jim Jenks He was working for Hanson as I recall Hanson may have built the first OP Boards. He then started the clothing line. Made a pile of money and built a 85" Yacht that piggy backed a 30" Fishing Boat. That was sometime in The 1980s. Seems like he might be out there somewhere in the Pacific still chasing world Record Black Marlin.
