Hello guys, hope you all been good and santa brings you lots of presents…
I got some stuff (MPV?) from len and the plan was:-
*Tape up the rail and glass an insert of MPV on deck, then trim and remove tape.
*Tape up ON edge on MPV and glass bottom with surf9 and trim to a tape and razor.
I wanted to glass the deck next. all was going to plan then I changed my mind and just glassed some 6 0z tape down the seam. (weak as shit but i’ll see how the stuff holds up on its own). Tape isn’t in photo yet.
I sanded the MPV before the tape and there was no problems, however i wouldn’t like to hit the stuff,
It glassed great, very impressed, it did take longer and I used epoxy which gave me time and I didn’t wrap the lap which would have been a different story for sure.
I used the new stuff that has 0.5 mm holes all over it. it was the 4 oz.
Most of my shortboards over the years have been a single 4oz deck so it should be a good test. PU blank also.
I used some SP epoxy that i got as a sample. that was weird, it did a few strange cluster resin gather things (may have been me but) i did drain the shit out of it however???
Cheap as chips… no its cheeper then a bag of chips for the deck with this stuff… fingers crossed, hope it’s good.
he hadn’t worked out a price, but he hit me a wopping $1 / m… and gave me free 4m of the old stuff. and a free blank to try (it was well beat up but it’ll be my sons 1st board) yeah i’m stoked Len was in a happy/merry state of being, I wish him and his family all the best and many happy returns for the new year.
glassed a little bit on deck (not over the rails) then bit bigger bit on the bottom over the rails and touched the big bit with the little bit (only a touch) and put a band aid over the two with 6oz
I also read about the syntex in one of the older threads. I found it at place back east. I think it was James Town Distributors. Pretty cool stuff. Super soft, light, wet out clear, no itch, and sucked resin like a monster! I ended up destroying a project board after making the mistake of bagging it under a layer of corecell. I guess I shouldn’t say the board was destroyed but it came out weighing a ton. If I ever use it again I would have to say vacuum bagging with a peelply and a breather are mandatory.
I couldn’t even get the resin to stretch when wetting out the cloth with the amount of resin that I would normally use with a regular cloth of the same weight, the cloth was 4 oz.
DMP…sounds like a total bummer. I can effectively cross that off the list. I have plenty of other ways to make heavy boards if I want (LOL).
I think there’s an age old approach on this stuff that should just be a given. Some people go with a heavier core and lighter on the glassing schedule…others go light core and heavy on the glass. What’s the difference?
Obviously a heavy core has got a different ride. There’s all that core weight inside whereas the reverse shifts and distributes the weight to throughout the skin. Two different dynamics altogether. Maybe (and just maybe) if you are a surfer who like to drop to the bottom for big turns and spend a minimal amount of time riding the top, heavy cores could be your preference. Have you ever noticed how heavy, boxy shaped boards like the bottom and light thin railed wafers love top line surfing?
I personally prefer top line surfing because that’s where the speed is at. I’ve always had a preference toward ‘flyers’…however some of my guns have had volume for the drop and drive off the bottom approach.
I think the nylon, MPV, whatever the hell it’s correctly called, has a lot of potential worthy of exploring. That hammer test that was performed might show even more impressive resistance to dinging if it was done with a rubber mallet to simulate a board going up on cobblestone rocks. Yeah, I know…nobody has to worry about that with their pussystraps.
My board will be sanded and surfed tomorrow… well today its 1 am. Its currently being post cured at 60 c for a total of 16 hours. The stuff really seems stronger, its a demo I wasn’t afraid to give it a good squeeze.
The blank was a very thick one in the first place and unfortunately I took a lot of foam off the top. Soft deck. I liked the bottom rocker I cut first up and left it at that, its a bit of a sin I know.
hows the waves on the east coast of oz… well swell anyway. lot of places have been junk!. its been full on rain and wind. good waves up nth though… well i’ve been chasing waves from kirra to noosa and even the great barrier reef over the silly season… i surfed the most perfect, heavy spitting, barrelling waves of my life three days ago, got to tell ya. Indo in oz…also first sober new years in 15 years and im proud of it…i drink too much on a daily basis anyway!
as I said i surfed that board (nylon thing, one layer) on a point brake for three hrs.
First thing i noticed was the flex, sooo much flex it was full on, very strange feeling. not a flex with memory, but a dowey flex, like being hit on the head with a dead mullet. THUD.
Good point is it was BLUNT impact resistant very pleasing.
there was evidence that a semi sharp strike would cause tearing,
destruction. (repairing the stuff ???). lots of spider shatters. solid overall foot depressions are minimal.
I noticed it sucked up more resin and was thicker then a single surf9 4oz when dry.
rating out of ten for a single layer on PU blank, well, not good. 2… if that
maybe a different story on EPS with a layer of glass over it… and cabon rails to control flex. ???
Took some photos but not worth showing here as didn’t show much.
not giving up on it though… F@#k, Love this surfboard shit!
Thanks for clarifying that for me…I was a bit dense when I first read his glassing description…it didn’t follow the usual pattern of bottom layup first and threw me off.
So now we have contention that this stuff ISN’T MPV but a shroud for cropdusters that crash after take off (just joking)…
…point is the stuff is around a buck a metre and can fight off a hammer. That’s impressive. Now all I need is who the hell is distributing it in OZ and how I get some in sunny California.
I’m sure all the looky lews are lurking so if you have a name PM it to me instead of spraying it all over Swaylockland. If you look at all the posts I’ve made in the past several months, I think I’ve been generous enough with people that want to spew what they’ve learned so they can fake it as a knowledgeable craftsman.
GIVE ME A NAME! gIVE Me A nAmE! MY KINGDOM FOR A NAME!!!
Deanbo…I’m after the manufacturer…direct is always better unless I have to buy some mnimum like 10,000 yds. But if it really was something like a bck a metre I’d want a bolt if it is netting that kind of strength…
Huie PM’d me and is sending a few metres to me…I’m so grateful AND STOKED. I’ll look up Shapers for a website unless you know it already…
Thanks to both you mates!
Cheers
P.S. I put a email out to a source up here to see if they have a line on it…we will see.
Hey Yorky…thanks for notes on the surfing test. I think it’s important to note that we never used the stuff without glass with it. Doughy doesn’t sound good…but the impact feature does…also, if the flex isn’t ideal, screw the carbon and use WARP GLASS. Surely you guys have it? 66% of the glass strand running nose to tail…1/3 the fill running rail to rail.
Otherwise uni directional or “poor man’s uni” (my own quote)…and you’re there.
And as far as this stuff being fatter and thirstier (sounds like someone I’d never date) the MPV we had was really a lot smaller/finer than 4 oz…so I don’t think we’ve found the real culprit…the search for the holy grail continues…
the New Year has begun…get in that shaping room!!!

I’ll keep you posted and a few pic’s too.
cheers.
Yorky…I just noticed this…what kind of blank wuz this…?
I keep hearing all the blank manufacturers claiming consistent cell density thru their blanks…I have a difficult time believing that…your stripping more than 3/8" to 1/2" off the deck should’ve have made for one thirsty bitch…which would taint your test altogether, unless I too perform your cardinal sin of overworking the deck…shame on you, Ten Hail Mary’s for that one!!!
The good thing for Catholics (the ones that haven’t killed themselves trying to follow the Pope’s archaic guidelines for living) is that they can go out and sin like hell becuz there is always confession tomorrow! :(…sin…:0…confession…:)…clean and ready to sin again!!
this stuff seems like NIDA-CORE MATLINE … have done a couple board with parts of it. will know how they hold up over the next few weeks… definitly seems heavier and is difficult to work with on pu. but im sure it will work insane on my resin infusion projects…
