Dolphin Tail: Wing-Tail Surfboard

To parallel the Surfing Industrial Complex and inflate my ego, I have decided to name this tail design the AKA-Stoneburner.
The design above is real and the story true -- no satire, no mock.

I had an idea over 2 years ago.  The original design concept was de novo and inspired by the dolphin tail (a marine cetacean).

It started as an all curves design and evolved into an angular (modified) dolphin tail. As such, it had/has nothing to do with the Johnson Stealth or Tomo surfboard tail designs.  I never saw either before I created this modified dolphin tail design.

I was too lazy to hand draw a dolphin tail or get out my large aluminum french curve.  So I used Photoshop to rotate, flip, re-size and print 2 copies of a Griffin fin template that was posted at Sways awhile back.  I taped the printed copies together to create a conceptual dolphin-tail diagram (the black line curves).  I put the diagram in a drawer.

After several days of rumination, I took the conceptual dolphin-tail diagram out of the drawer.  I decided I did not like the curved shape created by the Griffin fin templates.  I decided to use a fin that I own (the red pencil-line curve) to create a modified dolphin-tail curve.

Weeks and months passed.  The design evolved into an angular dolphin tail (yellow, pink and blue highlighted lines), the AKA-Stoneburner.

It is all about physics.

Experiment.  Do not experiment.  It does not affect me.

Let the games begin

you'll never know til you try it !

herb

I do not have any ocean waves close where I can evaluate real performance

i like the concept.............very much.

i'm going to start a new exp. board design ............here .................soon.

i could incorperate this feature...................if you'd like..................and give you some feed back.

it might take a few months to get it in the water though.

i think i'm done(for now) with present projects..............and this tail design will work on my future concept design board.

with this new computer i got a few months ago,it might actually be easier to post pics/vids as well !

herb

Yes Herb, I would be honored to have you experiment with it.  Will you go angular or curvilinear?

It was my intent to put this out there for those like you who might like to experiment with the concept.

The design has progressed beyond a tail template.  The tail template is the foundation.

Like most, I too have omitted a little secret sauce.

A few months will be much sooner than I could put it in the waves.

My original vision was a single fin.  However, application of the concept is certainly not limited to one fin.

Hmm, I smell a quad fin set up with shallow bonzer style concave married to that Tail.

Curves would go well with a egg template.

I trust That Herb will have some Ideas on what to do with tail.  He makes some exciting looking boards.

I like it. Cool.

I know exactly what that tail will suit perfectly.

Good work.

The ‘stoneburner’ name for the tail is great to. It suits it perfect.

Griffin calls his a Felix tail… after Felix the cat I believe.

What there’s two designers now! Come on… bloody hell im so over this shit!

look closer..................it's not the same.

leaning more angular..................fins..................you wait and see..................

herb

I wasn’t trying to say it was exactly the same… but its definitely in the same ballpark.  I think “Felix” is a great name too, I loved that cartoon when I was a kid!

I believe Herb may see it.  It is different, very different when you add the “secret sauce.”

The** angular design was created **specifically for the secret sauce and a particular bottom shape in the tail as well.

Whenever I present a new design/technology I am working on, I usually reveal 95% of what is needed but leave out an important 5%.

Perhaps we can come to some sort of arrangement Herb

BTW the AKA-Stoneburner name is/was tongue-in-cheek mock.

Find the popes in the pizza.

If you look closely, the diagram contains at least 4 possible design variants.

it's yours..................a stoneburner tail..............w/a spitzer twist !

arrangements can always be made.

herb

i love felix the cat...................especially the master cylinder episodes !

i think i see what burner sees..............nice stuff here !

herb

feral dave was doing these for a while pretty sure they went well he was also calling them the felix cant rember the fin arrangement maybe quods

NO

No worries Yorky.  I expected more than these.

Either you see it or you do not.

and the secret sauce is not in the diagram

What blank? How long? Finished blank soon?

I say go for it!  Shape it... glass it... and give it to Herb for Christmas..........so he can test drive it.........
