dos broomtails - builds

so I started out with a plan to build a broomtail fish for myself and then it turned into building another for some others to ride and give feedback on.

Tentative dimensions - I’ll see how it all flows best when I lay out the templates

1@ 6’4 x 21/22 x 2-5/8

1@ 5’10 x 21 x 2-3/4ish

Was hoping to run balsa stringers but since I’ve moved up north wood is a bit trickier to track down and blanks take about a month to order… Went with chambered redwood.

Got the blanks glued up and gonna try to finish shaping over the next few days.

Pardon the mess as I’m in the middle of building out my new shaping room (in an old barn)

Left 2" posts between chambers.

Just trying to drop a bit of weight, not trying to push the limits.

Drill out the corners and jigsaw the straights. Quick.

Well done!       Good clean work.      Do you know your total board count, to date?         You’re fast approaching professional quality.

Not 100% on my board count but it’s probably in the 40-50 range. All start to finish. Got a long way to go but there have been some very gracious people along the way who have given me great guidance, answering questions and allowing me to watch. I should make some headway this weekend and through early next week.

I like what you’re doing… keep up the good work.

(custom glue ups are part of the US Blanks business model). Maybe they have a job for you.

Carry on

Thought I’d give an update… Progress has been… Well slow…

Life happens. Sorry for lack of detail in the shaping process, it has hard enough getting the time to shape. Not a lot of time to stop and document. Maybe what’s posted will help someone.

I will definitely capture more of the process and detail on the next one.

finished shaping the 5’10 and started glassing it.

I thinned out the nose pretty good and I’m really happy with how the foil/foam distribution/rocker turned out. Flat deck - bottom is slight rolled nose to almost flat to flat out the back through the fins.

And in true Thrailkill fashion I had to go throw in a primo lable ( it’s not the right one but the only one I could track down) -

Hopefully I’ll get this one finished up over the next few days and get started on the 6’4

Sorry for the low quality pics… Just seeing them now and they aren’t Lookin too good hahaha

Did you, perhaps, weigh the shaped blank ?      If not, what was your impression of the shaped blanks weight.         The chambering you did on the stringer, really looked well executed.        The first chambered stringer board I ever did was in 1964, for a good friend, Terry Hall.       He still owns that board, some 52 years later.      That board was 9’ 10’', with a 5 1/4th inch wide stringer.     But, I digress.       The subject surfboard looks really nice.         Very eye pleasing.

Blank felt light but I didn’t get a weight. I will on the next one. I am not scared of a lot of foam or heavier boards ( I’m a big guy) so I always feel like I’m on air when I ride smaller boards like this.

I’ll get an official finished weight on this one and capture more on the next one.

Nice work all around.  I agree with Bill;  your skill level is getting way up there.  Lowel

Out of curiosity why did you change the stringer? Is it for looks? strength? both?  The board looks great.

Lowel - thanks for the kind words. Long way to go but that’s the best part.

J3 - the reason I ditched the old stringer is both strength and its much more visually appealing ( at least to me). The original plan was balsa, but I couldn’t get my hands on any. Custom orders here take far too long for my impatient blood…

Also Bill, do these look familiar?

I see you’ve been to Morro Bay.

Yeah - Wavelengths.

The pics are horrible but anyone who wants to see some cool boards should go by. Lots of nice boards up in the rafters.

Well I finished laminating, routed the fin boxes, sanded the hot coat and did some basic resin pinlines around the inlay.

This project has turned out awesome. It’s what this place is all about…

Bill sent me a template in the mail (beyond grateful for all the time bill has spent with me and everything he has shared, amazing really)

Then Dave Town made another set of amazing fins (anyone in need of fins - Dave is the man)

And since moving I thought what better way to get to know some more people in the area than building a board so I’ve convinced saltyjon to lay down some of his pin stripes. I dropped the board off today so I’m pretty psyched to see what comes of it.

The end goal is that a ton of people will get to ride and enjoy it.

I’ve posted this is the past but I figured I’d show it again… This jig set up bill showed me makes for perfect boxes every time.

Can we all just say home run on the part of @saltyjon !!

Only down side is he says to wait a WEEK to gloss this thing. Haha I am not sure I have the patients for that haha.

Gonna get moving on finishing up the next one while I let this one cure. Gonna take the next one in a different direction visually (I think) maybe do something with the balsa scraps I got laying around.
