I am having a problem on the second cutlap of my double cutlap. I seem to be getting some bleeding over the previous layer. The resin seems to be getting under the tape. This hapens on the edge so its not getting under the tape in other areas. I did press down the tape really hard to try and seal it as best as possible. I layed the tape wright up to the edge of the previous layer. Is ther something I am doing wrong or a method of doing this that I can use for next time
Swifty, there is a lot of talk about the right kind of tape to use for doing the cut laps. It sounds like you may be using one of the painters tape,(blue or green). I can’t remember the right tape but it is back there some where, just look it up. Oh ya good luck.
Swifty look inside of the roll of tape, if it does not say 3M 233 you are not using the right tape. The painters tape(blue and green) are made to be easy to remove, they also don’t stick very well and will cause bleed problems, some of the other masking tapes leave a little of the glue behind. The 3M 233, and press it down with a ice cream stick along the edge, these two things will help solve your bleed problems. Good luck.
Yep, it’s just like Bagman says. I’ve used the Green Scotch 233 for years and never have bleed problems on either first or second lams. Be sure to mash the tape edge with a tongue depressor…
with a large weave cloth or really dry lam i have had problems on the second as well, even when using the good 3m tape… my solution is to paint around the bottom edge where i want the cut to be with lam resin to fill the weave and make a smooth surface before taping and glassing the deck, just keep it really thin and neat… ahhhhh extra weight and work, the joys…
Howzit Jim, I agree on the 233 tape, when they started pushing the 233+ tape, I was told that the 233 was going to be discontinued so I tried the 233+ and it works almost as good as the 233. But since 233+ is a little thinner it doesn't work as well for some applications. Needlass to say I'm really glad that they didn't stop making 233. Aloha,Kokua
Hey Guys…new to the forum… new to cut lap technique. I understand the concept of using the tape a couple inches from the rail on the deck. My question is this: If I’m going with clear resin on the deck, can I just wrap the cloth around the rails when I do the deck, or do I have to cut the cloth to lay in where I cut the cloth from doing the bottom? So far everything I’ve stayed away from cut lapping and have just painted, but I want to start trying some resin tints… coloring the bottom and rails, but leaving the deck clear.
I free lap the deck if its is clear going onto the bottom pigmented lam. You’ll probably see the glass strands, though, if that bothers you. A cut lap for the deck lam is an easy extra step. Mike
Great… thanks for the quick reply Mike. This forum is great. I hope I can return some wisdom back to everyone here in the future. I’m posting a pic of the second board I made. A friend wanted a 6’6 lis style fish. I told him it was way to big (he’s about 5’11 and 165 lbs.), but that’s what he wanted. Thanks again, Bill
