dragon skin

where can i find some dragon skin without having to buy it online from someplace like FoamEZ? thanks…

I use full size sheets of sanding screen that I buy at any good hardware store. It’s available in grits from 60 to 220. It is the size of a normal sheet of paper and they work really well. I’ve never used “dragon skin” but from what I can tell they are pretty much the same thing.

hope this helps.

Dragon skin is not like sanding screen. it’s way gnarlier and is a thin metal type of screen…I use it for the rails…It is kind of tricky to use at first.

Soulstice…I wouldn’t have a clue as who would have it in your area but I got mine from Mitches in Solano Beach.

Dragon Skin is dangerous stuff and strictly for the production guys.It will tear the heck out of a blank if you don’t know what you are doing.I would buy 40 grit instead.John Carper uses it in his video and he makes it look easy…it’s not.Just my humble opinion.

Howzit Mr.Clean, I’ve seen the damage it can do and it isn’t pretty. Seems like it’s the end corners that do most of the damage. Aloha, Kokua

I ain’t no production shaper and I use it… like I said it is tricky to use at first, but I haven’t damaged a blank yet… the tricky part for me is keeping the blank in the shaping racks when pulling the dragon skin along the rails. also you have to pull hard, long and steady do not use small strokes.

i’ve used it before and i’m comfortable with it…puts the rails on real quick…i just don’t know where to buy it. as for some rougher sand screen, i can’t find anything greater than 120 at the hardware stores…some 60 or 80 would be nice.

I used dragon skin for the first time today, and used the drywall screen as well. The skin seems to work faster and I didn’t run into any problems. Duct taping around the ends of your sheet give you a good handle. If you can’t find it, you’re not missing anything you can’t get with a drywall screen, IMHO.

…Autobody or wall/plasterers/ painting suppliers will have it,locally to you.Herb

Nothing ventured…nothing gained.

thanks, herb…i’ll give 'em a shot

Oh yeah, OSH stores carry small squares of it as well.(If you can find one, they all closed up around here).Herb

NOT! McDing

I love the damned stuff. Blends rails great! Been using it for years. I buy it in 2 or 3 foot pieces. When it tears I use the scraps for ding repair. Cut off a piece and tape the ends. NO FEAR! Hd McDing

Here is the company I buy sanding screen from in Florida. They have all grits available http://fiberglassflorida.com/2000/ but no shark skin as of the last time I was there.

To try and help with the edges of dragon skin gouging your blank, try and put a little masking tape along the edges.

It won’t completely stop the edge from digging in, but it will lower the likelyhood a fair amount.

As for low grit sanding screen, I went to an equipment rental place that rents huge orbital floor sanders and got 60 grit screens. THey are circular screens about 16inches in diameter, work great once you soften them up a little. Cost about 2 bucks each.
