I keep hearing about how Dragonfly makes better molded tech than either Surf tech or Board works. Has anyone actually seen the product? I know they make boards for some labels…but have yet to see a popout type with any of them.
Hi Noel,
Just took a look at their website. Looks like Mike and Tony Ho have a hand in this.
Did you notice the nugget style board here? [http://www.dragonflysport.com/polyfunboard.htm]
Aside from that, they claim that they have two machines that can cut custom shapes to our specs. Although, I didn’t find much as to how the boards are glassed. (Epoxy)

It’s not the same Mike Ho thats from Hawaii and Rips. Yes…I did notice the nugget style board on that. They must have got that from Surftech or some other shaper trying to capitalize. Still wondering what if any difference is in the popout tech. I suspect Isle surfboards Resin 8 comes from there, but there is no way to be sure. Possibly Santa Cruz.
hello Swayfolks,
well I am somewhat qualified to answer questions about Dragonfly boards as I sold over 400 boards made by them during my 9 months [Jan>Sept '06] managing a small surf shop in Laguna Beach that did a large business on eBay. we bought both PU/poly and EPS/epoxy construction boards from them. We had boards with the Dragonfly and TDF logos, as well as our own private-label boards. longboards and shortboards.
The EPS/epoxy longboards we sold seemd to be of average durability. I am not overly familiar with Surftech or Boardworks. the FCS plugs [on 2+1 set-ups] seemed especially suspect to damage with minimal impact to the fins…the plugs would crush into the bottom of the board pretty easily.
The PU/poly boards seemed to be of below-average durability. light glass jobs, lots of “triscuit-style” damage where the glass and the foam just all become a big chunk to clean out. I kept saying that the boards ought to have heavier glass jobs since it was mostly beginners buying them…
Dragonfly has also made EPS boards labeled Black Diamond.
that’s what I know from experience…

Were the epoxy the hard shell type? or…handshaped and laminated?
molded EPS boards, not handshaped.
That seems to match up with what I have seen on ebay and craigslist. I always see some guy trying to sell these boards in LA county and some in SD. The dude in LA sells like 6’4" fish that go for just over $300. The pictures looks like very chunky and generic in size and shape. I was specifically looking for a fish in that range, but looking at the pics it looks like a board you’d see at Costco, sports chalet and even play it again sports (yes, they carry “doyle” boards now too).

well, I am not an authority by any means but I have had a 9-6 PU dragonfly longboard for about 6 years. that board is a blast to ride and i have caught more waves on it than any other board I have owned. I have taught more people how to surf on it than any other board… It’s been beat and patched time and time again…so am I embarrased to be surfing a chinese popout… yeah a little… But had I not bought that board I wouldn’t have the quiver of 7-10 locally shapped boards. So I think there is a place for everything… I am thoroughly happy with my dragonfly board… a great starter board… when it’s finally time to let her go it will be a sad day…and I think I will have the shape duplicated by a local shaper and a fresh one built…
my 2 cents

Dragonfly=Clyde Beatty or no?
No idea…Bought mine from a dude off craigslist in OceanSide… years ago…
Escuse my ignorance but I don’t know who or what a clyde beatty is…
as osorojo pointed out there plugs get ripped out quit a bit for the pu or eps boards, and with the long boards ive had to repair a far share of the center boxes as well, i have also sen alot of the crack through to the foam next to the rails on the bottom of the broad
not a bad beginner board but you get what you pay for
This is kinda funny.
“Your shapes are OK, but can you copy this board for me”?
Guess i could just have it laser scanned and machined out too… Pay a guy to glass it…
Clyde Beatty runs the Factory in China for Dragon Fly.
Tony Ho is the owner - Michael his Son is in charge of Sales.
(Not Michael Ho the Famous Surfer/Legend and Father of Mason and Coco)
Clyde also owned the glassing factory that Rennie Yater started in Santa Barbara.
Clyde is a well known surfer of the 70’s.
Clyde had his own board label and was well known for the Rocket Fish.
Clyde is a part of surfing’s heritage.

Clyde’s Dad was a Lion Tamer in the Circus.
Hutch I hope you know a little history and your ignorance is know corrected!
Kind regards,
surfding
Thanks for the Clyde Beatty info Surfding... now I know why the Clyde I met had Jr. behind his name... his dad was quite famous by the look of it... not too many lion tamer dads out there...
