What is it?
A board that can be massive long wide and flat when paddling then shrinks to whatever shape you want once you have caught a wave; it will also be worm when the water is cold.
Anyone got ideas for materials and where to start?
I’m not sure this is exactly what you meant but I’ve been dreaming of building a retro shortboard like 6’0 x 21" x 2.5" almost flat rocker, single concave to V on the tail, wide round tail, and a round nose. Big single fin box with quad boxes on the sides, so then I can ride it with a big 'ol single fin some days, and quads when I wanna go fast.
This may sound goofy but I’d like to some day make myself a wall hanger. Perhaps a classic gun with a perfect gloss finish. Everything I make is made to be ridden and I’m usually so stoked that I stop at 220 grit and wax it up and go surf. Some day I’d like to slow down and make something for the wall with a perfect gloss finish…Someday…
That’s exactly the board I’m talking about
I’m in the same boat as you mate with the boards I make. I have a 180 grit problem
hahaha I have the same problem. When it cames the sanding part there are very nice waves and i wanna try it so i stop sanding.
I really wanna make a fat penguin, never try one but I like the design and looks very interesting to ride.
Are you serious about the penguin? What does a penguin shape board look like.
Wide round slightly thicker than in width, beaked nose,
Swooped out swallow tail, twin duck fins.
Seriously though I have the privilege of surfing with reel life penguin’s at my local breaks
And those cute little things take off on waves with more balls than laird Hamilton and carve smoother than Michael Peterson
there air attack shits on Christian Fletcher
bob and flappa just after a heavy sesh at the bombi

so this is a fat penguin!
Redwood and Balsa Swastika re-creation.
Redwood HotCurl.
Wooden Kookbox Paddleboard.
Jet Bottom single-fin.
Fang-Tail single too.
hydro_skiper i bloody like the funky shape of the fat penguin
It’s not about the performance of the board if it really has one, it’s because of the freaky shape.
I’ll might let the Fat Bitch Penguin project for the next year and finish all started ones
im trying to build surf skates now. It is a board that you can ride backwards and is able to ollie and slide around easy. My newest project is finless with a very gouged out concave nose and tail for some bite
[img_assist|nid=1075614|title=surfskate 2 -1|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75][img_assist|nid=1075616|title=surfskate2-2|desc=|link=none|align=none|width=100|height=75][img_assist|nid=1075617|title=surfskate2-3|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75][img_assist|nid=1075618|title=surfskate2-4|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75]well here she is: not sure if it works yet… I have many dreams about how I’d like to modify this one already and I havent even tried it out yet. I’d like to flare all the outside corners with a big concave leading up to the deck tapering from small to big, center to trailing edge, it would also curve away from center to aid in turning( this probably doesnt make sense, I need to draw it, or just build it.
Haha, I can’t believe people are asking about the fat penquin. I remember back in the ‘old’ days of Swaylocks (2004/5) that if people even brought it up, it was shut down. It was such a hot topic, people would argue over it. So much that they didn’t even use the name, only ‘FP’. Go ahead and make one, and please give a ride report. Personally, I think they would work. I like the wide back half and the smaller front half means less swing weight.
Monkstar1 next board i shape it’ll be a fat penguin for sure.
It has to work, the only problem is that there are no videos. The information I found it’s not too much but I’ll might be able to shape smething similar.

That is a very interesting shape mate, I have a few finless boards some have worked out good mostly not so good. It’s frustraiting you think you have the formula then (wtf)
I suppose, how do you know if you don’t try
