Drew-Tang Premium Shaper Services

I just wanted to announce what we’re doing here at Inspired Surfboards. We’re offering “premium services” through the factory. We’re not trying to compete with surfboard blank distributors, just offering some new services to keep our factory REALLY BUSY!!! And hopefully help anybody affected by the foam shortage. Anyway, the short of it:

  • custom blanks, REALLY CUSTOM: eps/xps, custom stringers, glue colors, wedge stringers, flex tails, pretty much anything you can think of (especially if we can figure it out on SWAYLOCKS!!!), custom profiles (let us show you how to make blank profiles SOO EASY: ultra flex moulding)
  • rental bays
  • “Celebrity Cam” Internet Camera. You can turn it off, but fans of your work would LOVE to check you out from anywhere on the planet. Plus, if you’re like me (an experienced hack) you know that if everybody tried to shape just like you, you’d always be the best!!
  • manual profile machine (Shapers Australia) super easy to make you own templates, or I’ll even let you use mine!!
  • 100% Resin Research Epoxy Lams
  • Coming soon: VITALS ™: Vacuum Infused TexAlium Laminations (sshhhhhh…)
  • Comfortable, Clean factory (read: cold beer, cigars, a fish tank, and a dart board:)
  • Experienced Crew
  • “Work Vacation” packages available: discounted ocean front accomidations, inshore/nearshore fishing packages with one of THREE liscensed local captains (and either employees/teamers), some of the most consistent surf in Florida, and one of the best “Team Pain” concrete skateparks less than 2 miles from the factory.

That’s the jist of it. Since “Black Monday” or whatever we’ve been busting ass re-tooling the factory, and I’m not ashamed to claim that I’m pretty proud of what we’ve done. My company borrowed money for the first time in 12 years, but I think it’s the most exciting time in surfboard manufacturing history. We built boards out of the Dow foam for the first five years, and even built some blanks until we admittedly got lazy and built the same stupid product out of convenience!! Now it’s ON!! There’s a million ways to do this, every board is NEW!! Just as a timeframe; we unclamped our first batch this morning, so this is a pre-release announcement. Any pointers or hints, even stouch criticism is more than welcomed:

Here’s some pics:

the wifey…

Hot wire table. This thing is TITS!!! It has wings, power, everything fits nice and neat underneath, I swear, all it’s missing is the sink and wetbar!!!

What blank shortage??? These are the first ones, see how I always forget to change the '05 to '06 for like 3 months!!!

Glue-up room. Those racks work great for laminating, I use 1 1/4" full-round closet rod, and 5 minute epoxy them in, pretty solid USUALLY. These sagged from the weight of the bar clamps, got that fixed now…Oh, by the way I bought those super expensive “cabinet master” clamps online for about $40/clamp, so 10 clamps came out to $400+shipping. I found some on Ebay, the pistol grip wratcheting ones for like $2, and they work WAY BETTER!!! That’s how you learn…

Anyway, I don’t know where my pictures are going?? I’m back to work. Anybody interested give me a shout!!

Drew

Good on ya, and good luck to you. Glad you have the future in mind, and I hope yours is good.

Good idea offering the holiday/in-house boardmaking package, should be a winner.

I like a good clean shop.

Me too! I’ve been cramped inside of 500 s.f. for sooo long, then last summer got another 500 to move glassing out, now I have 2,500 and it’s JUST ENOUGH space to actually organize and keep clean. I’ve been out of my mom’s garage for 10 years and this is the first time it actually felt like it!! I’m stoked…

Nice job Drew. I will definitely have to stop by next time I’m passing through.

Good luck.

Paul
