I have just finished sanding the hot coat and had a few questions. Will the gloss coat cover up pin holes that i have in the hot coat? How do you clean the dust off the board? Do you mix the gloss coat with more catalyst and wax than the hot coat? This is my first board, I think it is coming out ok up to this point but i haven’t found much info on the gloss coat. Thanks.
it will seal tiny pinholes, a successful gloss depends on how clean the board is.
Steps we take,
- blow up off board
2.wash board with fresh clean acetone
- pull tape across board, dragging lightly to pick up any extra dust.
Gloss IMMIDIATELY…
Your tape line is essential as well
some guys hotcoat two times. probably you can handle this a bit better at the beginning. you´ll double your chance to cover everything and seal everything. but don´t forget it´s a surfboard and it doesn´t have to be bulletproof
good luck

I forgot to mention, If you have PINLINES on your board done in Posca or any other type of PEN, DO NOT wipe those areas with acetone.
Howzit F1, I wash the board with soap and water and rinse with fresh water before I gloss. As soon as I rinse the board I watch for spots where the water disapates real fast and those are potental contaminated areas, these areas I use acetone on and then re wash the board again. Plus I find when you rinse the board with any nozzle sprayer it cleans the dust out of any pin holes better than acetone will, plus water is a lot cheaper than acetone. Aloha,Kokua
…i use air, then styrene, then water with soap, then tape to pick up tiny amount of dust…, i do the aircleaning in other place than i will do the gloss…this is essential…
Howzit reverb, Why styrene,it’s a thinner not a cleaner and more toxic than acetone. Aloha, Kokua
Kokua:
Are you using dishsoap?
Tom S.
Howzit tomas, Yes antibacterial dish soap, Don’t want them to catch a cold or the flu. Aloha, Kokua
…well Kokua, acetone let the resin something brittle for my taste…
…i dont had good results with acetone, and acetone is like an enemy for the resin in my mind…
Howzit reverb, Ever notice how acetone leave a chemical residue on the board, that's one reason I always wash the board. Aloha, Kokua
