Dust Collection 2

Hey someone deleted my post.

Does anyone use a dust collection system in there sanding rooms? I like to contain my dust. Has anyone used and portable units with any luck?

How many boards do you do?

If you are a small guy wanting a cleaner system I generally layed out a roadmap in John Mellor’s post “Made Where”…this gives you a method for blowng and directing sanding (or shaping for that matter, into a drop chute/collector box with air exit and filter…can be done very cheaply…wood if you want or even heavy cardboard.

Go check it out.

Heavy cardboard

FAU disposable (or washable) filter

1 to 2 $20 box fans

Your good to go.

Thanks We do around 10-15 boards a week. Do you have a link to your post? What about the static electricity build up in the box? Could that cause a fire?

If you worred about that…use drywall or some other material in place of cardboard…I designed this setup for lighter use than what you’re doing, but it’ll still work even with volume.

Hey DeadShaper

Can you elaborate with some pics or diagrams???

Cheers

I just PM’d you on this…if you know how and wish to post it on here, go for it…I don’t want to repeat myself, so I hope you can post it.

Note: Okay, I doubt that what I sent you will work. I did a low tech rendition showing top view and side views then put them on here and when I viewed it Sway’s had totally changed it…hacked it all up! Someone tell me how to draw it on this site or to scan and send it…or maybe I should draw it and shoot a digital and post it…

Words can only explain so much! Maybe this will work: forget it…just tried and it didn’t work…ok.picture U is dustbin and it is behind the / before the filter. …Sways want to register left on everyting maybe dots will fill the void space.

Hey DeadShaper

Well I looked into it more and drew a picture to see if I could work it out.

Came up with the picture attached.

Still not quite sure about how the dust falls into the bin as apposed to blowing into the filter.

Cheers

MDS…that’s pretty much it…you’ve got it!

I know it seems too simple to work but the key ingredients are directing the air to the funnel box and the angled deflector that TRIPS THE AIR over it and coauses it to swoop down immediately after it. The dust particles are heavier than the air and most of it falls into your dust bin while the air looks for an escape because more air and dust is coming into it. It’s a high pressure low pressure scenario…the air has to go somewhere, and it is going to go where there is the least resitance. Physics my dear Watson.

You can muck up the formula or greatly lessen the efficiency of the system if you make the air have to bounce too hard, or make the dust bin too shallow, or have too dense an FAU filter etc. etc.

The idea to keep in mind is to create a wind tunel of sorts that directs the air to the angled ‘trip’ and on out the filtered exit. You could have a 2nd filter a few feet further down the pike if need be. Just play with it…but this is the formula that will work on a shoestring budget. It beats to hell a totally dusty environment and you coughing and sputtering or being covered head to foot in sanding dust.

Here’s another tip: if you get the itch, try applying baby powder on your senstivie areas (arms, etc) before sanding. The talcum powder fills your pores that the glass fibers would normally work into…when you’re done sanding, blow off with glancing shots of air or take a cold shower to rinse off.** (Edit: Huie says use cornstarch… safer with same effect.)**

Thanks for all the info Deadshaper.

I will make up something with cardboard to test it out and see how it all works.

Then might look at something a little more solid and semi perminant.

I need to to be able to move it out for space when doing other things.

Will let you know.

Cheers

MDS,

No worries…yeah making it portable is a good thing. I mean, simple framing that will deflect the dusty wind doesn’t have to be fancy. It could smaller dimension wood than 2x4’s and then have heavy plastic stapled to it for that matter. The whole idea is just to get the concept right and if it is made out of scrap wood from cutoffs at the local lumber yard or giveaway cardboard boxes, or sheet rock…it really doesn’t matter. I think using material that doesn’t attract dust sticking to it too much is a plus.

The whole challenge and attraction to doing a wind tunnel is that you can push the air cheaper than you can suck or pull it in…and you can do it inexpensively. Cheap and good is the goal.

Happily,

Your Low Tech Engineer

Good system on a budget… I’m gonna try it !

dead use corn flower instead   also for your gloves                                   talc is mined in same area as asbestos

cheers huie

A:  Your drawing is ALMOST CORRECT… your 45 degree piece is too low. You need to “TRIP THE WIND”…BF aka ds
