Dust collection

What kind of dust collection systems are you guys using? I will be sanding finished boards in a fairly small area. Would a woodworkers type dust collector like the Delta 50-850 suffice? Do I also need a large fan to blow the dust into the collector? What kind of dust collection is used in the shaping room? Obviously…I am very ignorant on the subject. With enough input…perhaps I can come up with a solution!

clarkfoam, has a dust collector for @ $300.00,i’m thinking about getting one myself,i’ve heard alot on foam sanding dust laying around is a fire hazard

The only good way to sand finished boards in a small area is to use a sander with a dust collection system. The best ones are made by Fein and Festool. I recommend that you use the vacuum systems that go with the sander. Shop vac’s and the like do not have suitable filters for handling glass dust. These “dust-less” sanders are way more expensive compared to ordinary rotary sanders, but are worth it in the long run.

I looked on Clark Foam’s website…couldn’t find any dust collector’s. Do you have the correct link? I would like to see what their’s looks like.

Clark makes a vacuum system for planers only, since most of them have a dust port. The system is not suitable nor intended for sanding boards.

Okay. I’m realizing that to sand in my glassing room is not a practical option. I should have known better. Now I am looking into low cost outside shelters like Wall tents, Hoop houses…? All I really need is a covered area to contain my mess. Might just have to build a 13’ x 8’ shed. Thanks for all of your suggestions though. I’m off to plan “B”.
