I have the John Carper Shaping101 DVD
I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on whether getting ‘Shaped by Dick Brewer’ would
add anything to the mix that I’m not getting from John Carpers DVD and that would justify another $40-50.

i’ve got the JC set and Greg Loehr’s video.
Greg Loehrs vid is much better than the JC vids.
don’t know anything about DB’s vid.
i’ve heard only good things from the Jim Phillips DVD’s and would like to eventually get them.
EDIT: WOW! lightning struck while i was typing my post!!! nice avatar Otis
I think it’s worth it.The JC 101 video is just that, a 101 video on how to shape your first shortboard. I think it does a pretty good job at that. Greg Loehr’s video is more of a 102 video and very good. Other quality videos like Dick Brewer’s and Jim Phillips Master series are well worth getting because they get more into old school longboard shaping, but I think there is a segment on shaping a shortboard also. It’s been so long since I watched them I can’t remember exactly. They’re all good for different reasons.
Something to keep in mind about YouTube and 101 shaping videos is they usually are meant to show a beginner how to shape his/her first board, So if it isn’t your first board, they are still fun to watch just to see how others do the basics. You never know when you might pick up a little nugget to use yourself.
Jim Phillip’s video is the most detailed. Add to that the glassing video by Roger Brucker and you have a pretty good set. I haven’t seen Greg’s video’s but I didn’t like Carper’s 2 videos.
Some of the stuff on Youtube is really good and it’s free. Just do a little searching and you’ll find a few that will be worth the time. Everyone has a different style, different way of starting and finishing, so I like seeing a lot of videos and then using a mix of the styles I like.
is there anywhere online where you can purchaser/download Jims or Greg's vids. Happy to pay for them, but it's easier for me to download than wait for a dvd to get shipped these days.
I've got the JC ones but would like to see more detailed tips.
i have them all and some.
JC’s was done early on and is more of an advertisement he jokes around allot
jim and roger’s are the most professional
and greg’s EPS is the only one dedicated to eps too bad it was before timberflex
I have a set from Pravda Surf that was even more beginner than JCs
and Tom Sullivan’s 1995 Vacuum Bagging video is the definitely video on basic compsand bagging technique.
the warvel youtube posts from cerritos with greg are good too
i think the cerritos demos should’ve been filmed and sold.
i don’t think you can download the master series dvd’s but i think foamez was selling them online before
Damascus Productions made the Master Shaper and Glasser Series with Jim and Roger and the same with Greg EPS and Drew Brophy’s Paint Pen Techniques video.
there’s a pro board repair dvd you can download from that surfer’s video network site but its just repairs.
Yeah, with the shopping cart of shaper tools, with a ‘will shape for food’ sign, or something like that, and “nobody steals in California”. Funny stuff.
I forgot about that one. I have it too. 100.5 Seriously basic.
I’ve got the JC one , and more recently bought the second Jim Phillips one , where he shapes the shortboard.( Because of recommendations on this site, I must add.).
They’re both good but the Phillips dvd is the more detailed and comprehensive of the two for sure. Both guys have their own way of doing things , and leave little things out , so the two complement each other nicely.
As far as Youtube this would be the best I’ve seen , in terms of shaper pedigree anyway

He obvously has custom rockered blanks , cos he never checks the rocker - also makes liberal use of a belt sander. …
dble post
I’ve got both of Jim’s DVD’s and I refer to the longboard one all the time.
I’ve looked at some of the ones on Youtube and there’s a lot of bad advice on some of them. Others are good but don’t really tell you much. You have to read between the lines (frames as it were) and others give you just enough information to be dangerous.
I can’t believe how detailed Jim’s are and the trade secrets he gives away. Of course knowing how something is done and doing it are two different things. For example: I know how to play the violin. I can’t play one to save my life.
GregTate has a review in this thread
http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/review-d-brewers-dvd-shaping
It appears the Brewer DVD is a bit of a let down by the reviews…sad…it would be nice to get something akin
to what many reputable shapers have gotten from him in the way of paid lessons.
I ordered the Master Glasser DVD just yesterday, I’m going to start glassing again, its been over 20 years since
I did that and need to upgrade and refresh with that.
and thanks ChrisP about my avatar, the old one is from the NewYorker magazine if that even exists anymore
and was a oft-used cartoon reference to the Great Depression. Kind of timely, but time for a change(Nov 2012 kind of change).
I had to stop at 4:21 seconds, I was going to kill myself I I watched him jump from nose to tail to left rail to bottom to right rail to top to tip to swallow tail to right rail to bottom to left rail to to to rails to middle of bottom. No method at all, that’s not shaping, that is just grinding it out to go to the next one
Yeah well , that dovetails nicely with what others have said about Youtube 'shaping ’ vids. : )
I’ll take this opportunity to say , many many thanks for the DVD(s) Jim , really appreciate it.
I decided earlier today to buy your first one as well - lookin forward to seeing it .
come on Jim… weren’t you at least a little impressed with his one handed planer technique!!!
Howzit chrisp , I met Dick 40 years ago and he has never impressed me except with a few of his Gun boards and the board he shaped me was a POS. I can just imagine what his video must be like especially for someone who charges $5,000 to teach a person the shape or try to teach. If I were buying a video I would buy tha Jim and Cleanlines vids since they are the real deal and not egotistical type guys and make the videos to teach and not just to make money. Aloha,Kokua
Kokua , Dick shaped boards for me in the past and watching him in the shop I cant imagine him doing a how to video. In real life he goes from slow motion to fast forward so fast I don't think it can be videod and he mumbles a lot, doesn't use complete sentences and gets off track real easy. When he is shapeing though he is very fluid and smooth ! My biggest problem with him is Dick knows whats best for you regardless of what you want ! Diffenderfer was much the same !
Howzit Wood_Ogre, You are so right about Dick knowing what to shape for you even if it's not what you want and he pulled that on me one time on Oahu and the board was a POS. I have to say that Diff shaped me a couple of boards that were just what I wanted and they worked great for me. Now if he shaped what he thought I should want then I have to say he was right on,but they sure looked like what I ordered. I know I have never seen a video from Dick but it seems I may have heard about one a couple of years ago and I think there are a few youtube vids with him shaping.Aloha Kokua.
