I just wanted to get the word out that Ricky Carroll is having an open house at his R & D factory in Rockledge, Florida on April 22nd from 12-4. This is free and everyone is invited. There will be a tour of the factory and live shaping, airbrush, and glassing demos. There will be representatives from many companies as well as many local shapers on hand. This was put together as an educational/informational tool where people can learn the process of what goes into making a surfboard and to have access to representatives from all different outlets in the surf industry to ask questions firsthand.
There will be blank manufacturers/distributors on hand as well as people that represent fin and glass supply companies (Fiberglass Florida).
I’d like to add also that this is a huge effort on Ricky’s part to open up his factory to the general public and allow anyone from the local board-building industry to take part and contribute thier part. R & D Surf does both Polyester and Epoxy boards, so there should be a little something for everyone there, no matter what you ride.
I will try and get a list of names once everyone is confirmed, but I wanted to get the word out since this is not too far away.
Where:
R & D Surf
488 Gus Hipp Blvd, Rockledge Florida (map below)
When:
Saturday, April 22nd 2006 12-4pm
FREE, open to the general public, anyone with an interest in surfboards or surfing is welcome to attend.
moderators: Any chance of making this a sticky up top? Thanks.
This is going to be a great educational event. The Surf industry is coming out strong to support this and to try and educate the surfing community. There will be many different shapers there, live demos and speakers/mentors for what will be great live Q&A sessions.
I’d love to come down to the open house to visit Ricky, Jim, Chris and all those guys. Jim taught me great glassing techniques when I was living down there (back when the fishy folks were right next door). But I have a wedding to attend and the wife won’t let me out of it. Maybe if all goes well this may become an annual or semi-annual event.
Get some photos and post them for all to see.
Ricky is one of the best in the business and I hope to get down to see the guys soon.

Just got back from this. Those guys did a really nice informative job! Hats off to them! I suspect it opened up the eyes of people that have never seen the process before.
Just wanted to say thanks for the good time today! My buddy and I were pretty stoked after we left that was all we talked about on the ride home! Thanks again!
Tons of cool boards going through. Good mix of Poly and EPS as well as some nice resin work and cool airbrushes. Lots of cool Chris Birch fishes. Paradise was stoked because his triple stinger EPS twin fin got glassed and hotcoated yesterday at the event. Very cool event, and a good turnout and well organized.
This was great fun for sure and yeah my new EPS non-Retro, triple stringer, light, hand crafted beautiful twinnnnnnn is looking good. Tbird should post some pics over here.
Great event. Here’s a couple of pictures I took. Should of took more. I spent most of my time listening and talking. Can’t wait to see pictures of your new stick !
