Ebay HWS kit

Quote:

I wonder if Tucker Wood Working in Laguna Beach is sending any kind of royalty check to Paul? Yeah, I know, he didn’t invent the HWS… But how much you want to bet that this operation was inspired by his work and/or website?

I’ve always been puzzled why the wood board guys are so concerned that someone is copying their method and feel they should be compensated. It totally goes against the surfboard shaping tradition, where information on how to shape and glass boards is widely shared, designs freely appropriated and added to, and so on.

Is it a difference in personality between two different types of people? the “builder/engineer” type that is attracted to making hollow wood boards vs. the “artist” type that is sculpting shapes out of a block of foam? I don’t know. But whatever it is, I find it odd.

He said this is the first one but is going to put another one on ebay soon.

Thanks - I’m really looking forward to your feedback/updates on the kit & the building process.

Aww, don’t get me wrong, that was all just a little tongue-in-cheek. After all, if I was really “so concerned” I wouldn’t have been considering buying it. I’m also not really representative of the wood guys (I don’t do hollow wood), so he wouldn’t have been copying my method at all. The real HWS guys didn’t say a peep, so probably not an issue at all.

I contacted the guy as well, and what he told me was that he was kind of ebaying as a way to feel out some retail price points, as well as just getting some more kits out there to kind of work out the kinks as the first bunch are built. Sounds like getting in on the first few is the way to go, pricewise.

Have you read the account on Paul’s site of how two guys that he had generously shared his techniques with showed up on his beach and started pitching to potential customers, using Paul’s board as a sample?

"He goes on with a full on sales pitch about how their boards are “like fine jewelry”, and boards like these are "investments” and how what they’re making is like “investing in fine art”… Huh…???..

He’s saying all this while holding MY BOARD…!!!..

The surfers ask D— “How much…???..”

D— rolls out " Five Thousand"…

WHAT…???..

Then he goes into another barrage of “investment - jewelry - art”…

PUHLEEASE…

By now there are about six other people looking at my two boards while D— just keeps on rolling…

I interrupt D— to tell everyone, that what D— is trying to sell, is all available for FREE on my web-site…

Someone asks me what I think a board like this should sell for…I say based upon my experience and understanding of high-end boards, $2,500…

But, I’m quick to add, that I’m not really interested in making boards for others, but glad to help them make their own boards…That’s why I made the web site…

That just doesn’t slow down D— one bit…Now he’s talking about CNC machined parts, limited edition boards…And on and on and on…He just won’t shut up… "

I think that Paul Jensen is a truly admirable and forgiving individual. If two similar a-holes pulled crap like that on me, there would likely be an unexplained drowning (or two).

ED S 7/10 - HYPERBOLE A LITTLE OVER THE TOP THERE, but the point is that there are limits to how much someone is willing to share, when some of the “sharees” try to pervert that knowledge to victimize both the sharer and his intended beneficiaries…

I guess eventually one more did make it to ebay.

Fedex just came to my house. My wife bought it for me, for my birthday!!!

Damn I love her.

I was gonna start a new board today and she asked if I could

wait a week or so. I had no idea why. Now I know.

I’ll try to take photos as I go along. I don’t own a camera so the

photos may come sporadically as I am able to borrow one.

What’s in the box???

All I’ve ever seen is the box…

Is this the huge box hoax?

I think the box is empty…

I like your nail polish…

Alright Hicksy, here you go.

first pic is the complete kit as it comes out of the box

Next is the decking kinda spread out but still wrapped up.

Underneath the decking you can kinda see the ribs

A little better shot of the ribs

No nail polish just the flash. Actually I think my daughters foot(to the right) may have

some. I saw the same thing and almost went back down stairs to take another photo.

Good stuff Riddem, many thanks for that.

Is all that stuff heavy, what was it’s shipping weight…

The weight claimed on the box for shipping was 8 pounds.

However, when I stood on a scale and held the box, my weight

increased by 20 pounds.

Not exact, just a bathroom scale.

Looked at the kit a little closer this morning. It looks like it was

well thought out. I’m gonna have fun with this.
