Edge Board Construction

I know most of you won’t care or already know, but to stem the 5-10 e-mails a day I’m getting, I thought I post this to answer the same question once. I don’t know how Bob Duncan does it or anyone else that has shaped one but: 1) Figure out the thickness and foil distribution you are going to use and adjust the rocker accordingly. Figure an additional 1/4 inch for the inner hull. 2) Rough shape the deck first so you minimize abuse to the bottom. 3) Cut the template shape 4) Finish the deck and upper half of rails (pinched, round, whatever) 5) Trace the inner hull outline on the bottom. 6) With the planer set on 1/16, take a pass along the rail side of the inner hull outline mark. Continue making passes along the line and you will see the edge appear. Blend the nose and tail as you see fit. 7) Finish the bottom half of the rail. 8) Take it to the glasser and watch them s***! or 9) Put the board back on the racks bottom side up. Tape off the top of the edge and about 1/4 inch out from the base of the edge. Squeeze a bead of silicon gel along the base of the edge and smooth it with a finger or other rounded tool so there is a skateboard-ramp-like transition between the rail and the top of the edge (I take no credit for this idea). 10) Take it to the glasser and watch them shake their heads and say, “Whatever…” or 11) Glass it yourself and say “Never again…” To the rest of you in cyberland, I hope this helps. Have fun.
