What relationship do edges and fins play. On the big soft rail 50/50 boards, a huge fin seems the necessity. However, the more edge in a board it seems the less fin necessary. How much edge, bevel, corner, can you add to the rail? Any boards with bodyboard rails on them? If so, how do they work. I’m sure someone has tried this sort of beveled rail thing. Any comments on this topic are cool, just thought I’d get some discussion going. Maybe even build a board with all beveled rails?
The reason boards with 50/50 rails have bigger fins is because they are usually single fins and as you get further on rail you need more fin to keep enough in the water. Soft round rails hold better. Sharp hard edges shed water more and are looser. The efficiency of the smaller side fins place closer top the rail yield the holding power to engauge more rail farther forward while on rail.
Tom Morey’s Swizzle is an example of an all beveled edge rail.
