EDIT: good sources for blanks and supplies in Europe

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a german shaper, who has some time to answer some questions
I want to start shaping my own boards, because I always felt like the boards I've ridden didn't fit to me…
You can just contact me !

Hope you have a great day

Keep surfing,

René

Why German? Your english seems pretty good. Better than many "so called" english speakers on here ;oD

haha, thanks

I just wanted to know where the people in Holland/Germany/denmark get their blanks from. I found a website in france. I'm just starting this whole thing and I don't really know how different the quality of those blanks are…
The beginning seems a bit complicated. haha

Also I didn't really find a website which shows what materials I need for glasing the board. I saw some "starter sets" with tools and stuff like that…

René

Where do you think you will you "test" the board once you have built it?

Where do you think you will you "test" the board once you have built it?
I go surfing in Holland, Germany, Denmark, France and Spain

It's hard to say where people are from, which make this place interesting.

If the supply house is in France, I would say ask Balsa, he might be familiar with them.

Otherwise maybe ask Havaard or Hans where they have had success with supplies.  Maybe some of the others in that part of the world will offer advice.

I would have titled the post 'good sources for blanks and supplies in Europe' to get more answers.

Macht's gut!

Thanks a lot jrandy ! I will contact them.

he dude

private supplier in France is Atua Cores, great service, speak english

they can sell you EVERYTHING you need but only if you want an EPS surfboard

personally, i stay away from polyester as much as i can. If you want poly by all means, try Viral Surfboards, poor service, but if you are lucky, they serve you well…

and advice can be gotten here, provided you are specific in your request, not some vague crap

read up first, use the proper marks to ask questions, like, the dimension at nose, tail, 1 foot off nose and tail, midsection etc…

if you want a properly designed, great surfing board, contact george gall on this site, he can help you with a good design…

Or build your own boards, but don't expect to make great surfing boards instantly

I do not agree with Wouter's comment about Viral's "poor service". Maybe you had a bad experience once? That does not mean that service is "poor" on a daily basis; Actually I've been consistently buying pretty much all my blanks, resin, cloth… from them for several years now. I had a problem once and that was a long time ago when they tried to promote a small spanish blank manufacturer; the guys were new to the game and some blanks were not up to standard quality. After spending long hours shaping a mini malibu for a friend, I started glassing it and half an hour later both rails had melted. The guys at Viral gave me not one but three blanks in compensation. I don't call that "poor service" even though it was a bad experience.

@Thewreck94: two main suppliers for Europe, as far as I know: Viral and Seabase. Viral is located in Bidart, France and Seabase can be contacted either in England or in Hossegor, France. Viral carries Arctic Blanks and occasionally some Burford (australian blanks). Seabase is the european distributor for US Blanks. Both carry a huge line of fiberglass cloth (Hexcel, Aerialite) and polyester and epoxy resins (Silmar, RR)

As far as advices are concerned, you knocked at the right door when coming here at Swaylock's. pretty much any question you could ask will certainly find an answer in the archives but some guys are ready to help you online with more specific questions.

Welcome on board.

Hi René!

welcome to the forum. Being from Germany myself I understand that it's not easy to get blanks. Where do you live? I am based in Munich. When I started shaping I didn't kow any shapers nearby so I've literally spent hours and days reading through posts on swaylock's and learned everything I know about shaping here. Not that I know that much, especially compared to a lot of other contributers here. but I am stoked to ride my own boards and excited to start new projects.

I have also ordered from atuacores before and bought blanks from seabase, France, as well. Both took their time to help out a hobbyist like me. Shipping from France to Germany for one blank is about 100 euros. it's the same sum for 5 blanks, so consider ordering with friends…

Due to inavailability of proper blanks I have also stripped windsurfers or used construction material (EPS blocks). This might be a cheaper alternative to look into, however it's hard to get a comparably light and strong surfboard and it's very labour intensive.

Good advice has been given here, try to soak in all information you can get!

Thanks for the information ! I read something about polyester and I'm not really into it. I watched a friend, shaping his own longboard (skateboard) and he worked with epoxy.

Well I'm a person who tries to build and construct eveything by myself… so I will start shaping my own boards… I'm always souper proud if something I made was good and very usefull for myself

Thanks for the information, I will definitely get myself in those themes and websites ! regards, René

Seabase are great for resin and cloth, and you could always try Homeblown in UK for blanks. I'm sure they would ship and I can vouch for the quality.

Cheers!

Hi René,

are you only locking for preshaped blanks?

I´m buying EPS blocks from a local EPS producing company and hotwire the blanks out of it.

This is a company in Holland that cut EPS blanks according to your requirements http://www.numboards.com/producten.htm

You can get good EPS blocks from here http://bacuplast.de/surfboard/surfboardselbstbau.html the also sell most of the other material for boardbuilding.

There are also several adresses in Germany to buy surfboard making stuff like http://www.r-g.de/de/, http://www.hp-textiles.com/shop/ etc. (just google to find more)

Here is a useful forum in german for repair and board building (windsurfing) http://www.surf-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?90-Selbstbau-Reparaturen.

On Youtube there are endless videos of shaping and glassing surboards.

Aloha
