Edit: Which boards to take? Sri Lanka in December

So, I got a boardbag (until now I always took my van) und am pleasantly surprised that it fits even two boards with glass on fins. The bag will reach neither the weight nor the hight limit, so I’m left wondering which boards to choose. I am already leaning towards a decision, but it seems like I still need a little nudge.

2 out of the following 3.

  • 5’10 classic keel fish.

  • 5’10 twin fin pintail

  • 5’8 mini simmons

Initially I didn’t even think about the mini, as I didn’t expect it to fit in the bag. Turns out, any combination of those boards will fit. The mini was my very first shape and nose and tail turned out quite thick. However, this translates to tremendous amounts of float and given that I’m not really looking at firing conditions over, it occures like a good choice. I also really love surfing my fish, prety much my daily driver, but then again, I also like the pintail, which has more rocker in the nose and of course quite a bit more rocker in the tail.

What would the wise men of swaylocks recommend?

Not necessarily related to shaping, but I thought I’d give it a shot.

Normally I’m down in Portugal this time around, but my van broke down and I won’t be able to fix ist before the end of the year, so I was left with the question, where to go these coming weeks.

Living in Europe, Sri Lanka seemed like a good bet, as I’m everything but rich. I know that the surf won’t be huge, but that doesn’t bother me too much, as I prefer clean, small waves anyway.

What I figured out so far is that this time of the year, the West/Southwest coast is the place to be.

Anyone of you been there? Some insight to share? Or even planned a trip yourself?

BTW, my little twinfin pintail works really nicely. I might put some inserts in for a little trailer fin or so, but really satisfied so far. Planning on shaping 2-3 more boards around christmas.

Been there 4 times and going there again this January. I like the mellow waves (mostly) and the people are really friendly.

One thing I for sure don’t like is the traffic. I’ve been in some sketchy countries but the trucks and buses in Sri Lanka are pretty insane!

It can be more crowded around Christmas/new year as everywhere else. Lots of Russians

Have a nice trip. Feel free to PM me if you like

The South West is easy to do without braving the roads too much. Just jump on a train in Colombo. I went the SW and East coasts back in Sept 2003 and scored some really nice, mellow waves. Mirissa was my favourite place - low key, mellow and fresh seafood straight off the boat if you picked your day right.

that sounds great, just as I imagined.

and Jode, sure, I’d love to hear more!

sounds like for the conditions you’re looking to ride, I’d take the fish and mini Simmons. any chance you could post some pics, I’m interested mostly in that twin fin pintail. I love riding twin fins here in FL and have a set of the MR twin fins that I use a lot.

Sure. This the mini, first board I shaped.

very nice, I love the artwork on the deck of the mini Simmons. now that I’ve seen the boards though I’ve changed my mind. that twin fin pintail looks a lot like the board I ride a lot. I have a 6’8" Rozo secret weapon model and I’ve seen some smaller versions that look almost just like your shape, so I’d go with the fish and that twinnie.

just take the fish
