i am building a 7’6" performance egg. i had intentions of putting in a slide box with sidebites. should i use the FCS longboard sidebites? or use something a little larger? or go with a thruster setup? i need some egghead help
Hey Teddy, If it were my board I’d put either Furture or Red-X boxes on the rails. FCS just doesn’t cut it IMHO. Mahalo, Rich
O’fish’l fins are good too.
Thats a huge question with a million answers…just remember that a particular fin set-up is going to work better with a matching rail/rocker/foil. If you mix and match you may be surprised at how poorly it performs. What kind of waves are you riding and how you define “performance” will also affect things. In general the thruster likes fuller rails with a tuck, v’s with concaves, and a curvier rocker in the tail. Single will like pinched soft rails, soft v or roll, and a straighter tail rocker. I’m not much for “training wheels” but they apparently work on a larger variety of rail/rocker/foil combos.
i have had good results with a standard thruster layout on a 7’-4" egg. (i use o’fishl snap-in boxes, with 4-1/2" pro-tec fins) it was made for people wanting to make the transition from longboarding to shortboarding. it has served well for this for several people i know. if you are using a blank with a nice foil, and fair amount of rocker, like a 7’4"R, you should have no problems. my template measures- 15-1/2" nose, 21-1/2" mid, 14-3/4" tail. pin tail. 2-3/4" thick. the rocker was left pretty close to natural, and the rails full. good luck. brian
well the whole idea is he wants to be able to ride it as a single fin, for those smaller days, hence the fin box. when it picks up for bigger beach breaks he wants to have the side fins. it has a pretty flat bottom with a soft nose, tucked under to a semi sharp tail. will the smaller l/b FCS sidebites be enough hold? sticking with FCS. easy to install, and not one problem yet. don’t skimp on the milled fibers.
I did an egg earlier this year with a single box and for some reason it wouldnt hold on big turns no matter what kind of fin I used. So I had a set of FCS plugs intstalled for side bites. I didnt have a set of longboard side bites so I threw in some Merricks just to see what would happen. The middle fin is a 70’s 9" stock plastic fin from Fins Unlimited. It looks like it has way too much fin but it actually goes pretty good. I plan on trying some smaller side bites to see what happens.
