El cheapo grom build single fin = $40

Got inspired by resin head on the cheap build. Snagged a free blank from the man at nor cal surf shop.I also got a free pre shaped blank.I owe the man a 12 pack for sure.Tip was busted off so only 5’3 to work with… Found a template on blending curves that was 5’2" and cool.trying to get my 7 year old son out there this summer. Build # 16

Traced out line

Cut out line and shaved

Found a piece of ply at the park and traced a fin from blending curves ,cut and shaped , layer up with 2 x 4 oz scrapes.

Glassed up with 2 x hot coats. No sanding on rails, deck, bottom ,keeping the shine since it’s a grom beater .

I let him paint the foam with paint pens and had an extra dancing bears logo on rice paper I put in the mix

Fin not too sharp for safety

Total cost for cloth and resin about $40. He is happy and I had a grand time making it for him . Good father to son experience all around.

thanks for looking.

Very cool! Love the custom artwork!

Thanks huck. Five nights at Freddy’s is the theme… The kids are into that these days.

Awesome project in every aspect.

It’s nice that you use scraps to build a cheap fin.

But it’s a bit unfortunate that you don’t foil the fin properly. Unless if you go for the cheap look of course.

Well done!  Nothing like building a board with your kid.  The memories will last way longer than the board!

Cool!
My daughter asked if we ciuld build her a board. She wants to paint it too.

Hans, he mentions that he left the fin blunt for safety.

Ok I missed that, good idea to make it blunt.

Also, it doesn’t matter too much for these kids, but you can still get a decent foil with a blunt trailing edge.

Please don’t take this as an attack or anything, it’s positive critisism. Trying to raise the bar of amateur building.

I love the board and the build thread!

Thanks guys, I was gonna say for a board that’s getting pushed into a sandy shore how high performance does the fin have to be? I figured the sand would foil it over time:)

hopefully take it out next week for summer time fun. He wants to wax it of course
