Epoxy, Auto Paint. Does it work?

Heres the plan.

Shape

Glass it with a very light layer of 2 oz

Sand weave

Paint…

Here is my question. The customer wants to spray his own artwork on, and has lots of sick colors (has his own spray booth). I know the paint would not go well with EPS. so im trying to improvise. Will there be an bonding issues with an automotive paint and a layer of 6 oz? Im trying to stay away from spraying on EPS since of its en even and porous nature even after spackle/micro balloons.

glass with 6oz

hotcoat

etc

thanks for the help, im really stoked on this board, the artwork should be sick.

have him paint on top of the snaded hot coat and then have him seal it with his automotive 2pac clearcoat and bake it.

should come out just like his cars…

thats what i thought would work too oneula, but he wants it to be under the glass for that look. I would have to agree, sprays under glass look 100 times better then ontop on the hotcoat. Have you experience with the auto paint? looks like some test pieces are in order. Thanks man.

never seen it directly on the foam

Roger’s DVD shows him doing over a poly hotcoat to create a marbling effect before he gloss coats it. I think you’d want water based acrylics over foam.

I don’t know of any auto paints that don’t use lacquer or enamel…

Oneula has the right idea. If you plan the paint job well you can tint the initial lamination and cheater/fill coat with a complimentary color. Use a pre glass fin system like ofishl or futures. Sand the board to 180 grit and send to the painter. He tapes off the boxes already under the glass and does his thing, paint job then 2 coat clear. It will look better than any on foam paint job hands down.

The art work will look as if it is floating in tint.

spray on the sanded hotcoat, much easier. On EPS you will have to use waterbased paints. Not as vibrant as thinners based paints.

Finish it with either a gloss coat or a 2pack clear.

Even finishing with auto acrylic clear will give you good protection.
