epoxy color question & PPG Automotive Paint Tinting Test

I need a little advice when it comes to epoxy and color. This being my first glass & color job I not sure of the process or the products I need.

I would like the finished product to look a little pastel like, and see through - I want to be able to see the stringer once complete.

I purchased the following product (see attached image) I'm not sure if its correct? It says "pigment polyester resin tinting". Will this give me the desired outcome I'm looking for? A tint not paint?

My second question is, this did not come with instructions, how do I apply it and how much do I use? Do I just mix it with the resin?

** See tinting test below..**

thanks for your help.

Josh

I should mention Im using RR resin.

Do i mix this product with the resin or the hardener? What coat, first or second?

How much color do I add?

Is there a way to determine if its tint?

Please help?

it will work with epoxy

mix the 2 parts of epoxy together then add the tint,, (mix throughly) the amount of tint may vary so add a little at a time, there is no set amount

use it in the lamination layer,,,(first layer of glass)

mix double the normal amount, work quickly and get the epoxy on the board to prevent exotherm

good luck and show us your work

Thanks Ken.

One more unrelated question - I have access to PPG waterbased automotive paint and was considering using a basepaint as tint (mix with resin as you suggested above)? Is that possible or would it distroy the resin?

I dont know

do a test

Going to test the PPG waterbased automotive paint with epoxy this afternoon - I'll let you know what happens.

Unrelated question; cut laps: after glassing the bottom and cuting the cut lap how to I finish the top?

Do I just glass the unglassed area up to the previous cut lap or do I do the reverse and run the glass around to the bottom and create a new cut lap?

thanks

you can do a deck patch ,, as you mentioned and then a full layer over that

or two full layers stagered at the rail

have you read this thread?

It has some great info and a good YouTube link that should answer your
questions.

Completed the PPG water based automotive tinting test to determine if epoxy would still dry, bind and retain its strength.

To do this I put together a batch of epoxy, mixed in the hardener and started adding paint. See image attached.

The three samples have no noticable differences other then the light blue color, not sure why the color is different around the edge (looks wet but it is dry).

I still need to ensure the paint won't eat the foam but other then that it looks possible.

Why,,,,,?

Why do you have to make it so complex.....

If you have water based paint....paint the blank.....paint the thing....with a spray gun...done deal. And why on earth do you want to use expensive PPG Automotive paint on a surfboard?

Go to the craft store and spend three dollars on paint......

If you have resin pigments and /or tints do the color in the resin.......

Ahhhhhh....Old guy going on a rant....going on vacation in 4 hours...........

Because I get the paint for free & can mix and match the colors as I see fit lol.

Thanks for the suggestion on painting the blank, ill give that a try.
