I found this article by WEST SYSTEM where they tested a few sources of colorants that might be used with their epoxy.

Chers Ryan,
Thier words not mine - “The point is, people are often looking for a color other than the black 423 Graphite, 501 White or 503 Gray Pigments offered in the WEST SYSTEM® product line.” - no shit! ; )
Good to Know that poly pigments at 5% don’t really affect their epoxy resin. I use some white poly pigment for an R&R ding repair and it worked fine.
Hey Woody,
Yah, I like that they’re comfortable enough with it to publish it.
It’s a pretty informal panel of tests but it is reassuring. The one thing they didn’t test is poly tints. They tested pigment but I’d like to be able to use transparent tints with epoxy.
Cheers back at ya’
Ryan
You should do a Google search on “Pigment Dispersions”- theres loads of info on that. The suppliers (Ashland Chem & Rev Chem ect.) to local glass shops usually carry them. The PDs are formulated specifically for either Epoxy or Poly (or any other coating for that matter) though I’ve seen Poly PDs used in Epoxy glass jobs. The trick to doing tints is getting the blanks surface finish smooth and uniform. Any scratches or imperfections will show up darker and look like crap.
Atomized,
Good tip. Thanks. I’ll do the search. Since I’ll be doing EPS I’ll be doing a fill/seal coat.
I was in the shop last Saturday checking out the boards. Admiring your handywork you might say. Some nice looking stuff on those racks.
hey thanks ryan
that link was very helpful
