epoxy didn't go hard

hi all. i made the mistake of pouring my rr hardener out over my mixing cup. some spilled in by accident, but i didn’t know how much. so i added what i thought would be the right amount, thinking at least there would be too much.

it was only a tablespoon amount for one fcs fin plug (i ran out after 4.5 plugs)

it turns out there wasn’t enough hardener, because after two days it is not quite hard. like a very stiff jelly that i can dent with my fingernail. i haven’t sanded down the excess yet, but it seems the plug is in there solid. is there anything i can do to get it to fully harden? or do i have a bit more flex in my fin than normal?

cheers, nicholas

when mixing small amounts you must be accurate

you could have too much hardner in it ,that will give you the soft set also

you could leave them in

but most would cut them out and redo

day late and a dollar short, but…

when in doubt, throw it out.

ESPECIALLY with small batches.

thats why eoxy sucks. totally unforgiving. take them out and do it right. but I dont know anything, Im just a kook. I would personlly just ride it and deal with it after the first session, after the box rips out. I wouldnt even wait a till its cured. I am that impatient. Thats why I cnat stant epoxy. I always ride them before they are fully cured and they mess up every time. but thats just me. and I could be wrong, maybe youre onto something new with the flex finbox. Try it.

Try a little bit of gentle heat for a while to see if it will harden more given a day or two. If that doesn’t help try some not so gentle heat like a hair dryer and see if that will make it runny so you can easily remove the plug. Make sure you don’t overheat the surrounding area tho.

right!

A guy I know measured the resin/hardener totally wrong, and the same thing happened… but to all 6 plugs!

I gave the guy the following options:

  1. Bore them out and re-intstall properly.

2)Ride it 'till it fails, then bore them all out and re-install properly.

  1. Patch over the plug with a couple layers of glass, ride 'till it fails, then bore them out and re-install properly.

  2. Fill the plugs with resin, then do glass-ons over top. (That would be my choice.)

In your case, because it’s only two plugs (?) I’d go with option 1.
