Epoxy Lam/Poly Hot/Poly Gloss?

Anyone try this? Heard to lightly hand sand the epoxy lam before poly hotcoat. Wipe with DN alcohol? Soap & water before poly hot?

This can work but eventually the poly will let go. May take years but it will. With the improvments in epoxy, both the speed of the curing agents and the addition of Additive F, hardly anyone does this any more.

Howzit 220, From what I've seen the poly doesn't adhere to the epoxy that well and poly also doesn't flex like epoxy. What will happen is at some time the board will flex more than the poly and an area or areas of poly will pop off from the epoxy. I've seen this happen a few times.Aloha,Kokua

FH told me that if you use their 2:1 epoxy, everything should be fine. Hmmmmm…

Howzit 220, Not really being an epoxy guy I can’t say but I’ve seen it happen with FH epoxy, but that was a few years ago. I’d definitly get a second opinion from some one who works with it. I for one have gotten different answers from different employees at FH. Aloha,Kokua

Hey 220

I agree with Kokua, Don’t go mixing it up, there’s no real advantage, different flexing properties.

I know nothing about epoxy compared to Greg and have no direct experience with this method. I have no idea if System 3 means that this works on a flexible medium like surfboard foam. That said, here is what is what is on the System 3 Epoxy website…

"SB-112

SB-112 is a clear, UV-resistant, almost water white high modulus epoxy system. Unlike many epoxy systems, SB-112 will cure to a clear, glossy, blush-free surface.

Recommended Uses:

It was especially formulated for use in building and repairing sail and surfboards over polystyrene cores. It can also be used for coating and laminating. SB-112 is unique in that polyester resins and gel coats may be bonded to it without the use of “tie-coats”. We recommend that polyester be bonded onto freshly sanded SB-112 epoxy within 48 hours of cure."

Am I the only one who uses a hi-gloss linear polyurethane??? It works freekin awesome!! Sand the board out with 320 and spray on some…the glossiest looking coat you’ll ever get!!

Aquafiend,

Where can I pick some up?
