Epoxy lam uneven thickness question

Have read the eps/epoxy primer several times and haven’t seen anything about what happened to me on my first epoxy lam. Just did the bottom lam (2 x 4 oz) with yellow pigment in the resin. After spreading out all my epoxy and wrapping my laps (which by the way seemed to go better than with PU - not sure why), I noticed that a few areas had thicker resin which of course showed up as darker yellow. These weren’t dips in the blank filled with more resin, but more like waves in the glass that just held more resin. I noticed that when I initially layed out the 4 oz cloth that it didn’t lay really totally flat everywhere like 6 oz cloth does - it was sort of wavy or slightly wrinkled in a few areas even though it had been stored in a nice roll before laying it out. Consequently, I couldn’t work the resin out of these thick areas with out squeeging the cloth too hard. Hopefully they will sand out or the hot coat will hide them. Any ideas why this happened and any recommendations for avoiding this on the deck? Maybe I need to let the dry cloth lay out on the board a bit and some of the waves in the cloth will flatten with a little time (?).

thanks,

Jim

Hey Jim - If it makes you feel any better I’ve had the same experience. But, being a self/shed shaper, I’ve started trying a thick “cheater coat” so I’ll only have a lam-sand coat and be done w/it. Hope someone has better info than me. Taylor
