Epoxy Mess - Help Needed

I used epoxy resin for hardener by mistake when putting on the sanding coat. Now I have a right old mess. Any tips for getting rid of the uncured resin so I can put some fresh stuff on?

Ive played a little with epoxy

I would scrape the goo off

then mix a hot batch and put it on and let it kick the leftover goo with it

someone else may have a better idea

I am not positive, but I don’t think that mixing a ‘hot’ batch would work. Epoxy is an addition reaction, not a catalytic reaction. …you might end up with a thin layer of uncured resin in between your hot coat and your new gloss coat. Not Good!

Maybe scraping off as much of it as you can, and then washing it off with something. Acetone is a no-no with epoxy, but maybe some DNA (alcohol) would take it off.

You might even be able to wash it off with soap and water. (You can wash it off you hands with it…) Then just rinse it and dry it real well before continuing.

That’s exactly what I got when I tried that method. Thanks for the tips.

Fortunately you will probably never do that again…I did it once about 2 years ago…LOL

I scraped it off with a razor blade and wiped it down with alcohol.that board is still being surfed.

Now …everytime I get a new batch of resin the first thing I do is take a sharpie and write in BIG letters by the neck of the bottle “H” on the hardener and “Resin” on the resin…I know…sounds stupid but my routine since that day has been to always look and say outloud to no one in general “Resin” and pour…Then “Hardener” and pour…

Scraping goo with a razor blade will definitely motivate you to not make that mistake again…

If you are ever not sure…just smell it…not breathe it or sniff it just a quick lab whiff and you will know…Resin…does not have a very strong odor…Hardener on the other hand will take your head off like ammonia…LOL

Live and learn…keep trying…

yep…scrape off what you can, then use DNA to thin what’s left on and wipe it off with a rag. Do it several times if you have to. You’re other option is to use a citrus-based cleaner…the same stuff you’d use to clean your tools… to get the majority of the stuff off, then do a few DNA wipes. Then, hit the lam lightly with a low # abrasive before you do your next sanding coat.
