Epoxy noserider

Hey there swaylockers

Im planning on building single fin noserider this summer in orange county. Think san onofre style log. Anyways, I’ve only used pu resin however this project is going to be done in the parents garage and feel that the smell might seep into the house resulting in harmful odors for my whole family and worst of all my parents screaming at me. I’ve never glassed with epoxy but I’m very curious and feel this is a good option due to having less of an odor. However I know that pu resin and epoxy have different properties of flex and such. I was wondering if anyone has made a log like this and if so what are the results? Does it still ride as a log should? Will I notice a difference? Also this will be my first time working with epoxy, is this too much a venture for my first epoxy work?

Forgot to mention I’ll be using standard poly foam

yeah…I made a few 10 footers a couple a few years back out of Walker classic weight foam and glassed them heavy  with Resin Research epoxy.  I used the slower epoxy so I had plenty of time to wet out.  I surfed the crap out of these boards at rocky points and reefs, never with a leash, and they are still going strong without a single delam.  (But plenty of dings!)  I would say get a classic weight foam, flatten out the rocker, don’t get too fancy with the color, and you will end up with a nice traditional style log.  I wouldn’t worry about the flex and all that, this will be a pretty low-tech board.

Thanks for the input! Just what im looking for. Would you mind describing your heavy glass schedule? I was thinking 2x6oz with a 4oz knee/chest patch and cant decide between a 2x4oz bottom or just a single 6 oz

On both of them I did 3x6oz on the deck and 2x6oz on the bottom.  I dropped some coin on resin to make those!  I think another option, which I’m gonna try on the next one, is to do what Gene Cooper is doing with his flex pigs and go with a tow-weight foam and lighter glass job.  He is of course using volan and poly, but I’m sure it would work ok with epoxy and regular glass.  I’m no expert, but I think the most important thing for us garage guys in making a good noserider is getting the rocker right.

Man you werent kidding on the heavy glass. I know the epoxy over a shortboard weight is nearly negligable, but since the board is so much bigger does it make big difference in weight versus poly resin? Totally agree on the importance of rocker in a noserider. I’ll most likely template (or more accurately compare) the rocker off a mix of my friends dano and my death dagger. Also im gonna try and get that tail kick im always hearing about. Im thinking I’ll stay away from trying to make that nose concave. seems like too much for my first log

I'm thinking San Onofre Style Log. And I'm thinking Old Mans not Church or Trails......The resin is not going to make or break the deal.....If you want a light board go EPS/Epoxy....

Old school heavy San Onofre....you want an old school blank and a good glass job. There's lots of good blanks out there. There's more than one way to skin a blank......

Ken Ebert at Segway Composites has blanks from a company called Warvel Foam. A little bit heavy...a little bit yellow...very dense.....good price....good foam for logs....

Stingray

I'd be curious as to how much the completed board weighed with triple 6 deck and double 6 bottom over Walker Classic density foam.

Okay so I also just realized i have the option of suncure poly resin. because you can lam and hot coat all in one day due to the degree of control in hardening, would the smell be reduced? this would be in a garage by the way. anyone have any idea if the smell wil be unbearable or transferred to the house?

Hi -

The bulk of the smell is from evaporating styrene and there is just as much in UV cure polyester resin as in MEKP polyester resin.

Resin Research epoxy is not even noticeable in comparison.

If the garage is attached to the house and smell is an issue, consider RR as an alternative.

I've done both with an attached garage and RR or equivalent is definitely the way to go.

Hozit quilldogg, John has it right about the amount of styrene in both resins but the difference is UV resin kicks and hardens so much faster that the smell goes away a lot faster. When you use just catalyst for harener it takes a longer time for all the styrene to evaporate so the smell lingers for a longer time. Epoxy has hardly any odor at all and you can hardly smell it. Aloha,Kokua
