Would epoxy work on a pu blank? Have 2 PU 8’0 and 9’5M blanks and want to put epoxy and carbon on them. Is epoxy on PU doable and is there anything I need to watch out for? I plan on keeping them in board bag and out of sun
Perfect! Epoxy/Polyurethane is a strong combination. Stronger than EPS/Epoxy. Stronger than Polyester/Polyurethane. Nothing special about how to do it. Just do it. They will be the two strongest boards you ever glassed.
PS— I will tell you my favorite layup on boards like yours Epoxy or Polyester. Mix Warp and straight E. Either 4oz Warp and 6oz. E for the deck with a 6oz. E for the bottom or vice versa. But mix them up on the deck. I like Warp because of the extra strands in the Warp. If you are doing Carbon you will probably be putting 4oz. over the Carbon. Use 4oz. Warp and wrap the rails. It will be more forgiving when you sand. Would be curious what you were considering for a layup.
I have been working with PU and epoxy for the last 4 years. I like glassing the boards heavier and they last longer.
Me too. Epoxy on a PU blank, for years, a couple dozen boards, no problems.
I haven’t tried carbon fiber, but my boards last long enough without it. Regular ding maintenance and the fact I don’t get out all that often anymore.
Also all my boards are bigger, and glassed heavier than the high performance shortboards.
7’10 twinzer w flat deck and a sting / wing squash pin ish 21.68 wide 2.7 thick 52L
Top: 6oz warp top w 4oz 50/50 weave deck patch
bottom: 6 oz warp
Biax carbon rails - 2 or 3 inch strip - how to deal with sting?
Maybe some uni on underside but blank already is 1/4 inch ply stringer
Would carbon rails be sandwiched between top and bottom layers then would I let the bottom lap kick then spray adhesive on the carbon tape then cutlap then top?
Is there anything to watch out for when using and tucking warp especially w breaks in rail ?
I probably would wet the Carbon out on a table and roll it up on a piece of PVC pipe. Apply it to the foam before any cloth. Baste the edge of the Carbon top and bottom. Then lay up the bottom Warp and just freelap onto the deck. Freelap to make the edge of the Carbon blend better. Freelap the deck onto the bottom with the deck patch under. It’s easier to adjust the Carbon tape this way. You can make relief cuts in the Carbon while it’s still wet. I never use my good scissors to cut wet cloth. I use those $.99 scissors I get at Harbor Freight. I hate to through away anything, so I wipe them clean, but if I don’t it’s no big loss. That’s my thinking. Nothing special about wrapping Warp.
With a 1/4” stringer and an all 6oz. layup, the Carbon shouldn’t be necessary, but definitely makes the board stronger.

Want a reinforced rail to deal w slippery San Diego reefs
and general wear and tear. Have had too many issues w dented rails
Understood. Been a few years, but I have tip toed across those reefs at the Cliffs with my board fin up a few times.
