Can I take a poly board that was done to gloss, sand it way down to the hot coat and then use a coat of epoxy? Will it work? Will it give the board some extra ding protection?
well this is kind of the reverse question that everyone asks. the jury is still out about the strenght of the bond between epoxy vs poly. due to the fact that they are complete different in their chemical make up and the way that they react.
i suppose if you wanted to you could sand it down but why would you want to ruin a perfectly good gloss coat. i dont think you will get that much more strenght out of it either.
i am sure that greg can give you a better answer.
It will work fine…butt…will give no more extra protection than a poly gloss… if the epoxy was in the glass you would get the strength/ding resistance…have fun…
It’s a board that’s about 5-months old. Poly noserider but is getting alot of cracks in the nose and a couple in the tail. Maybe 4 rail dings that have been repaired. Mostly other riders that have caused everything. Board is sweet. Noserides forever. Probably make another total epoxy. Gotta have it dingproof for the crowds…
Don’t bother with that one. It wouldn’t be worth the time. Build the next one epoxy.
Putting resin, epoxy or poly over a sanded finish offers no structural strength. Might seal up small cracks but won’t make it any stronger.

…I agree with Greg and Drew. I coated an old single fin in epoxy just to seal any weak bits and cover cracks. It did also provide a good surface for spraying and make the board look stacks better but I wouldent bother on a new board.
here’s the pic
Old board covered in epoxy. Looks new.

yes you can …you can put epoxy over poly ,but you can’t put poly over over epoxy…ET
