Epoxy over PU question

usually have my poly boards glassed S cloth, typically 6/6,4.

Would like to go with epoxy over pu foam on my next series of boards as I’m hearing good feedback on improved strength and durability with that combo, so looking for recommendations on the glassing schedule.  Continue with S cloth and the epoxy resin, or no need to go with S cloth as the epoxy provides the extra pop and protection…?

cheers

What size/type of boards are you riding? There are two schools of thought on the strength topic. First one is, yeah, use the epoxy with the same glassing schedule for improved strength. The second is, “S” cloth becomes too rigid with epoxy so use “E” or Warp cloth. Everyone is different so you’ll have to come to your own conclusion on that one. Either way, concrats on making the decision to work with epoxy…there’s lots of cool stuff coming down the pike.

I have a board that is us blanks red density, 6/4 top 6 bottom, all e cloth, RR epoxy, and I have no qualms about durability. It does get heel dents, but you have to knock it decently. And it doesn’t get all the little spider web style cracking like my pu/poly boards.

Cordura.

Send me a p.m. and I’ll tell you how

I take pretty good care of my boards.  For shortboards I was using 4 on bottom, 4+4 with 4 patch on deck.  Extremely durrable.  They dent but don’t shatter.  I quit on epoxy though a little over a year ago and went back to poliester resin.

On a side note with the epoxy over poly boards is that when you do get a ding that takes on water you can actually get black mold growing in the foam.  I’m guessing this doesn’t happen with typical poly construction cause the poly is toxic to mold.

“What size/type of boards are you riding?”

Ride a  7’6 to 8’2  mix of 5 fin stubs/racers/fun guns, HP longboards from 8’6 to 9’2.

Have ridden a half dozen EPS/epoxy boards over the past decade, from shorter quads to HP longboards.  Fun in the summer, prefer how PU penetrates the face in bigger/steeper/offshore.

You are confused. Take the "resin" out of the story.

S cloth vs E cloth .....oh yeah, it's a big deal....live it , learn it......S is harder to work with / cost more and is stronger....Better?   more testing needed.........

EPS / Poly same thing.....You have compressed several factors into one question. I feel your pain. I do not have the answer

‘You are confused’

thanks, very helpful, all is now clear…lol

No.........I am Ray.

I have a Maurice cole, which is epoxy over pu. I also got s cloth on the deck. I think s cloth makes a huge difference in terms of durability, but I don’t notice a difference in ride or feel. I also have a pupe in all s cloth that I dry docked on the rocks at lowers going leash less. Not even a mark.

I landed on the rail of my mc with my knee. Usually the rail just crushes and blows out the apex, but with s cloth/epoxy it just barely made a crack and made the cloth visible. No deformation of the rail.

I just bought a roll of 2.5 oz s cloth to double up on my boards. Should be light and bomb proof with epoxy. Epoxy isn’t nearly as brittle as pe, either. I think s cloth is worth the extra cost, IMO.
