Is there any sort of formula for deciding how much resin to use in each stage? I’m building my first board, it’s a 5’10" x 19" x 2 5/8" pointy-nosed fish. I have 6oz cloth and 24oz of resin (16 resin 8 hardener). My plan is to do one 6oz on the bottom, and one on the top, with a deck patch (maybe). Do I have enough resin? I can get more, but it’d just take some time. How much resin should I use for each stage of glassing? I’ve also got some purple resin tint, any suggestions for how much of that would make a nice rich coat?
hi, the good thing about epoxy is that you have plenty of time to do everything ,so its worth mixing up smaller quantities than what you need ,then just mixing a bit more so you just have enough, its saves wasting resin,
for your initital laminating i would weigh up your cut cloth and use the same amount of weight of resin plus about 20% extra ,this should get you all saturated with out any waste, use a hair dryer to spread the resin through the cloth as well, pete
if you’re not an experienced laminator, then you’re gonna be pushing it at those quantities. Rough estimate; board is ~ 12 sqft/side, or 1.5 sq yd. So, both sides = 3 sq yd. That’s 18 oz of resin just to do the lamination. An experienced laminator would be able to pull it off with the amounts you have and quite possibly get the sanding coat out of it too. If you’re new to the game, I’d go get yourself some more resin…
Purple tint on your first board? I’ve read that purple is the single hardest color to get right – might wanna think two or three times about that…also, even the expert color peeps on this board think doing color with epoxy is not easy if you want good results. Might wanna research that to get a feel of what you’re getting into.
Also, read Greg Lohr’s primer for info on (among other things) epoxy quantities, and add maybe 10 percent for inexperience – as was said, you can always mix up more

Sweet! I did that…not pigment but tint on my first board…and purple to boot! I got to see all my low spots, all the tiny divots, lap errors, stringer planer marks…
board rode great tho…

When someone says “use X oz of resin” as above in this thread or in Greg’s tips do they conventionally mean X or resin then add 1/2 X hardener for total of 1 1/2 X oz or do they mean start w/ 2/3 X and add 1/3 X of hardener so you END UP with X oz of final mix???
