epoxy question..

Hi there, I have shaped, patch pasted and sanded my surfboard. What next? Its gonna be glassing. The guy recommend a epoxy 815 from Crown, a Germany base company. According to my experience, epoxy 815 is used for mold laminating. Does any people here have used epoxy 815/mold laminating for glassing surfboard?

You are asking about an epoxy touted for “mold laminating”? That’s a contradiction in terms. The term “mold epoxy” refers to a cheap, clear epoxy, not suitable for laminating. You would pour mold epoxy into molds for making those clear tourist trinkets, etc. Laminating epoxies are much stronger than mold epoxy. Below is the cheapest source of clear laminating epoxy I’ve found, thanks to Mike D. Surfsource is in Florida, Southeast USA. Another good source is Fiberglass Supply in California. Use their System Three epoxy for laminating surfboards: http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/Epoxy/epoxy.html Both of the above epoxies have UV inhibitors. Raka Fiberglass, in Florida sells an amber epoxy for a good price. Be careful, Raka epoxy has no UV protection: http://www.raka.com All three of the above epoxies use 2/1 mix ratio. West Marine (www.westmarine.com) sells a clear, expensive high-mix ratio epoxy which includes UV protection. Higher mix ratios can be hard to keep up with in the fog of laminating. Ultraviolet light in sunshine breaks down epoxy. Epoxy UV inhibitors only partially protect epoxy. You can use any good laminating epoxy to laminate surfboards, but you have to protect it from the sun. Sand the outer epoxy glass, and cover it with good surfboard polyester resin. Thanks Noodle, Cant get System Three/Raka epoxy resin in Hong Kong. The guys here sell epoxy resin are damn shit~~… No instruction, no resin2hardener ration, no model no., no manufacturer name… They know nothing intead of taking money from your pocket.>>> You are asking about an epoxy touted for “mold laminating”? > That’s a contradiction in terms.
