Epoxy restoration/repair problems

I am fixing up an older paddleboard- an epoxy Hawaiian Paddleboards(Dennis Pang).I fixed all obvious dings and sanded out and redid old ugly repairs. I am painting the board now and am finding a bunch of little pinholes that are sucking in the paint just like they were tiny epoxy dings. Ouch! I was hoping that the paint would seal it up but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Can I save it as is and seal up the pinholes or do I need to sand off the paint and start again? And what do I seal it up with if I do have to sand it? What will seal the pinholes without sanding the new paint off? Thanks for your help

If the holes are those tiny pinholes, you may be able to get by with using one of the quick-drying laquer primer-sealers available from auto body supply and auto parts stores. Otherwise, trowel on pore filler and sand it smooth, re-prime and paint again.

After the first coat of paint the pinholes become obvious. Let that coat dry and the push spackling compound into the pinholes. After allowing the spackle to dry for a short time sand off any excess and finish your painting with 2 more coats of paint.

Thanks Guys- I’ll give it a try.

This isn’t Jeff Steinkamp from SC State Lifeguards is it? J Gulick here in NZ. E-mail me if it’s you Jeff . I had exactly the same problems with the first epoxy paddleboard I made and did what the guys have recomended - fill and re-paint. I was using Du-Pont Imron, hell-as expensive, with a high build epoxy undercoat. Hurt at the time but I’m still paddling that board many years later. Kia Ora, JG
