Epoxy Rubber

So I mixed up a small batch of epoxy for a leash plug and to cap some boxes. Well the ratio must have been a litttle off because by the end of the day it was still rubbery. The small batches can be a bitch to measure… I have been a little off before but nothing this bad… I figured it would harden overnight…nope. This is in 70 degree weather with Resin Research Fast Hardener - any hope of it hardening???

Has this happened to anyone before? The fiberglass caps over the boxes I can remove easy enough but the leash plug may be difficult - the resin in the leas plug hole is sort of a silacone consistency and does the ‘silly putty’ effect if you mess with it so its definately not hard enough to leave as is but I cant think of a good way to get rid of it and I am skeptical about it ever getting hard enough. Any suggestions?

It may kick in a couple of days or get it somewhere warm! Get those little 1 oz. medical measuring cups they are clear with diffrent graduated amounts on them I use a black sharpie to mark where I’m going on them before measuring so my old eyes can see! Depending on the plug size it takes about 3/4 oz to fill plug if you have laid in some cloth first !!! I have never had a problem !

Thanks for the suggestion - I have a small automative paint cup that I use that is marked in 1 oz increments and I was measuring up 3/4 of an once - I too have drawn some halfway & quarter marks and this has worked well before!

The ironic thing about this situation is that I had the correct amount of resin and then overpoured the hardener and instead of trying to compensate with more resin, I just stirred it up and tossed it and started again. Turns out the first batch actually did harden…I dont know how I screwed up so bad on the second batch … .what a koook!

The solution:

Pulled the soft glass up and got rid of the gummy residue with an iterative process of alcohol wipe, 40 grit sand and razor blade scrape. Fun Fun Fun!

Pulled the leash plug out and wiped away as much goo as I could from inside the hole but there is still a lot in there - hope that doesnt mees things up down the road…

Mixed up some more and added some x-55 accelerator and it is gummy after 1/2 hour so I think I am good now. Hopefully the left over gook wont hurt bonding in the leash cup and hopefully I got the boxes and surrounding areas good and clean and scuffed up for good bonding this second go-around…

The only time I see measuring by weight is an absolute MUST.
