yeegads, waxy…a " reputation" ?? … sadly , my skate ‘quiver’ is at the moment one board, at present with a broken front truck baseplate. ( I need to buy new trucks…one day !! A Christmas present to myself , perhaps?) It’s a trashed ‘santa cruz’ deck [concaved ] a mate SOLD me [!] I stripped it, sanded, varnished it, and re-gripped it. Looks okay now… [pity about the anorexic ‘duane peters’ attempt next to it !] I rode it a bit , on the streets on summer evenings and occassional forays to Perry Lakes skatepark with a mate, [who all the groms ask if I’m his dad…thanks, cheeky groms! but I AM old enough to be his son, so…whatever !] More skating to come, with our summer just weeks away…90 degrees fahrenheit forecast for this coming monday for example !! [why I skate in the evening seabreeze, generally!] ben

chip’s 1978 ‘quiver’…

early 2004 ‘quiver’ [deck view] …

Here are some of my skateboards (and my son’s “termite” board). My last name is Stephens, thus the collection of Stephens’ brand decks from the 70s. I have another of the wood Stephens mounted with ACS trucks and modern Turner/3dm Cambria slalom wheels now too. I also have a drop-deck downhill deck with randal trucks and justed ordered a pocketpistols slalom set up with their Manx wheels, Oust bearings, and tracker slalom trucks (a great deal for the holidays at $139 complete including shipping).

NICE !!!.. you are one serious skater.

Lucky you don’t grind handrails, or that ‘foxy lady’ would lose some serious skin…

       ben

'Cause my Camera is a B$%TCH! I dont have a quiver shot… But I can tell you whats in it…

I also bought a New Skateboard this morning before I went for a surf…

The New Board: Standard style skateboard I bought for $13 from the reject store… Its not the best carver or turner but that maybe because of the brand new rubbers that need to be worn down, all in all a pretty cool board.

Old Board: Its a 80s style wide kick tail, must have been bought from K-mart in the late 80s or 90s but it goes pretty well, I re-sanded and laquered it…

Self Shaped: This next board is the Nugget and rides really cool for what it is!

Self Shaped Mal: this is my longboard its 50’ and is a good cruiser.

Self Shaped: Diamond Tail, 39’ and its a good carver.

Self Shaped: Minifish, 21’? its good but might be a bit small…

So thats my skaty quiver.

Happy Surfing,

Josh,

PS… Chippa is there anywaves on the west coast? I had a surf today it was tiny but good but the tide was too low.

glassy though.

Yup! best way to do it! after surfing all day a cruisy skate? (ashfelt Surf) around is a good way to end the day. one other good thing about skaties is its quick to get you from Manly to Quensie. Ala Transport.

Josh.

Hey Bert, Anynews on the skaty, Didyou fix that whell grabbing problem? If so how? 'cause I board a new board that has the same problem… Happy Surfing,

Josh.

PS:… Most boards are made out of maple right? what about making one out of balsa? would that work and keep the weight down?

yea that board was a combo of balsa , cedar , fibreglass , epoxy , polyurethane and continuous rovings …

im no pro , but i couldnt believe the lift i got straight away … it was so light you had way more control …

the flex was real positive , i really liked it …

my skate buddy who basically rips , hes 41 and still boosts in the pipe forhand and backhand ,all the groms at the park will stop to watch him , you can hear them say " hey check out this old skooler " …

anyway he loved it , i was cringing at some of the stuff he was doing on it , i dont even know the names of the moves , but he was racking up some variety , i handed it out for some of the local groms to use , some crazy airs going down , one kid reckons he was doing the fastest most controlled flips hes ever done , the ones where the board spins in the air then comes back under the feet on the landing …

any way later last night my friend snapped it …

over the back trucks ,at the base of the ramp on the landing , it failed in tension , so its back to the drawing board , ive got some other ideas …

ill post up the next one , i know someone who makes skateboards for a living , so ill ask him for some advice , i reckon i just went to light on this one , but i think you have to go to the extremes and work your way back …

regards

BERT

o yea the extra arch worked well ,only slight contact with the deck …

but the flex of the deck probably made the problem worse as it let the trucks bend further under , the next one has to be slightly stiffer …

Oh… Dangit! That board looked so cool.

Maybe a board out of solid balsa? or maybe the same type as the last with a stringer? Oh well at least your having fun,

I’ll have to try the wheel arches.

Thanks for the reply,

Josh.

Used epoxy resin to glass on the fiberglass on my last one. Woods: maple and purpleheart

The epoxy resin seems to work alot better and gives a great finish. I’ll have to ride it some more to see if it’s really as strong as the poly resin.

Quiver:

  1. 52" x 15" mal, great for practicing noseriding and tricks.

  2. 24" x 10" self shaped piggy: great to bomb hills or carve up a sidewalk. Purpleheart and Mahogony.

  3. 30" x 8" mal shape by Element. Skinny, rounded ends, fun board to cruise with or bomb parking garages.

  4. 31" x 9.5 self-mae pin-tail: Woods requested by my g/f, really fun for mellow street skating until it broke about two days ago. Poplar and Oak. I DON’T RECOMMEND THESE WOODS.

  5. 33 x 9.5" self-made Newport 72, shaped after a template from an old fiberglass board. Woods: Black Walnut and Teak. Beautiful board, currently finishing the epoxy glassing schedule.

  6. 32.5 x 12 self-made street skate. Shaped with the cutouts in the front. Wish I could figure out how to get a tail-kick in the thing before I glass it…anybody got any pointers. Woods: Teak and Purpleheart. Solid, little heavy, would be great with a little kick in the tail.

  7. 36" x 10.5 self-made typical Sector Nine pin-tail shape. Bomb hills, not people. Great board for hauling ass on going down Signal Hill or the Junipero Drop in Long Beach.

…that sounds GREAT , “Ashes” !

got a photo or two [decks and bottoms] of that quiver , please ?

cheers mate !

ben

The Hixtreme, sandwich construction 3/8ply 2x6oz 3/8ply Epoxy with 1x6oz on the bottom between the trucks.

Very fast, used daily

That’s all I use(woods,fiberstuff,epoxy and formica)

Hey Ben

I bought the shortboard kit and this longboard kit but haven’t had the time to even open the boxes yet:

I don’t know what I’m going to do with them as I don’t have trucks and wheels and haven’t ridden a skateboard since 1983 or so.

I was actually trying to find out about their epoxy they were using and their Thin Air Press (TAP) method to vacuum bag fancy wood on some balsa boxes using their materials.

http://www.roarockit.com/rc_wood.php

I found out about them from my local Woodcraft store.

Oneula, I think you’ll like that kit. I ordered the same thing and my son and I made the longboard for me and the shortboard for him. It was a fun father-son project. I didn’t have any trouble getting enough vacuum with the hand pump or anything. Of course the boards have sat in our living room for a long time now since I don’t have a router to round over the sides, but we’ll get around to doing that eventually! (in the meantime we have probably a dozen skateboards around here so it’s not like we’re in a hurry to finish these).

Hey Chip, I used to manage a skate/snow shop a couple years back. you should check out Lib Tecnologies, better known for snowboards but they were making some great composite sk8

's with no wood. they were slightly lighter and had great pop and were soooo much more durable. of course skaters hated them because they were different (sound familiar to anyone?) and i’m not sure if they still make them. all the snowboarders who worked at the shop loved them.

good luck

Cheers Pat !

so WHAT material were they actually made out of mate ?

divinycell and such ?

…were they vacuum bagged ?

cheers !

ben

I still own one of those lib techs, the one i have is great for carveing bowls and banks…still going strong after 4 years ( i do not do too many tricks if any really) anyway lifted this layup image from the lib skate site, showing how the boards are layed up…basicly it is snowboard tech used to build a skate board…kind of an obivious solution realy for a longer lasting deck…

That looks pretty cool, is the laminate wood maple like a standard deck? Any idea on what weight fibreglass they use?

This site has some good info on snowboard construction

http://www.grafsnowboards.com

I wonder if you could use balsa as a core with fibreglass and maple laminates?

Sandbags work…or roll your car on it.That’s your pressure…the epoxy will create the heat.I have a double hand-crank press.
