one of my friends back in oregon has done some work with making epoxy type skateboards… he used some old turner skateboard blanks and laminated them up in a sandwich construction then did a final glass job like a surfboard complete with resin tints.
I really enjoyed skateing around on them, real carvey. he was also able to control the flex real well by varying the number of layers.
I wish I could give more details here but I am not in oregon at the moment and so can not talk to bryan about it. I am sure he would be willing to share information with you. drop him an email (bryan@sevensurfboards.com)
Thanks
josh
thanks for the contact Josh. I just sent him an email…

Most slalom skateboards are composite construction with wood core and fiberglass outer layers. From the old time turners and fibreflexes (both still making boards today) to the modern pocket pistols, roe, insect, airflow, comet, etc.

no problem, I love bryan’s work -real craftmanship- and he loves to talk about his projects with friends…also, i was just thinking about it, my current skateboard (has been for the last 2 years) is also an epoxy construction…albit along the lines of snowboard manufacturing techniques…it is built by the snowboard company libtech…great board, if a bit on the heavy side…i mainly like to just carve around bowls and transition, so i do not really notice, but it is strong and basicacally waterproof, so it does me fine…if you have a fast connection check out their website…mervin.com

hi josh !
Unfortunately, for some reason my email got returned…something about “incorrect address etiquette” , or something ???
I hope if I try again later maybe it won’t spit it back at me ?
any ideas ? …have you had any problems with that address you gave ?
cheers mate !

not sure what is up with that…it happpens from time to time though… I ususally try again in a day or so later…I know he is still getting emails from time to time since I just got one from him giving some advice about a surf board that i am building.
cheers,

I’d be hoping to ride mine in bowls, and on banks. I’m hoping the epoxy wouldn’t ding too easily, or not ?
…anyone here ride pools ,bowls, pipes with them, I wonder ?
[I may give ‘concrete wave’ an email perhaps, also…I notice they feature those terrains regularly [not that we have any fullpipes here that I know about, but you can live in hope, I guess !!]
That ‘Upland’ replica park you guys have there in America looks as good as the original…and Florida… mate, the parks there look absolutely UNREAL, from the shots I’VE seen !!
ben
the boards I am talking about brian making seem to be pretty tough. I think he rode it a bit on a couple of half pipes and said it was good.
I used to live two blocks away from the burnside skate park in portland oregon. That more than anything improved my skating for a time. I would love to get up and session it for a hour before anyone even thought of moving…the lines that can be drawn there are awesome, and it really taught me how to start pumping a transition for speed. I miss skating there and now where i live there is only some street, which I can not really get excited about…i think i am too much of a surfer
Most of the companies I mentioned make boards specifically for slalom - they have no tails and are otherwise unsuitable for bowl riding. However, Comet makes bamboo(?) and fiberglass boards in all shapes and I believe you’ll find one that is appropriate for skate parks and banks and the like.
Also, Fibreflex has done runs of their 70s teamrider and bowlrider type boards which are the size and shape for vert skating and are flexy composite boards. It’s hard to find one at the moment but they may be manufactured again this year. You just never know.
Most composite skateboards built today do use epoxies, especially if wood is involved in the composite. Epoxy sticks to wood much better, over 4 times as well.
Hey Ben…
Yah, I use Epoxy for all of my decks. Not Greg’s yet cuz you’ve gotta pay thru the nose to get stuff crossborder, but hopefully someday. It sticks better into the layers, and if it is humid out, it doesn’t come loose(like wood glue). Usually I layer up about 6 plies of wood oneither side of a 4-oz layer and place it in the press. And yes, by varying the glass layers, staggering them, and varying the wood thickness’ and grain directions, you have a lot of control over flex. Never had a properly pressed board fail yet (other than snapping in the middle from trying for air on a 4’ longskate…) As for sticking kick in the tails, I built a double ended press so that I can use what ever kick curve I want on the tail of the finished board and then chop the unwanted kick off the nose. The flipped tail doesnothing really on a longskate, except square up your manual. But it totally dresses up the finished board.
man!!!
what have i been missing all my life???
my son has been getting into skateboarding , ive been going down the skatepark with him , it looks like fun …
i had a go at a ramp when i was about 19 , face planted , got hurt and lost interest …
so i decide im gonna have a go , felt like a kook cruising the flats doing little reos off the base of the ramps and other park features …but i was having so much fun ,went back the next time and my confidence was growing , i was able to keep my momentum just from working off the features of the park , i rang a skate buddy and told him i was into skating , he agreed to meet me down the park later that night , he had to see this …
now im really hooked , after he gave me a few pointers im now riding the half pipe and am able to climb higher with each pump , i can only do backhand reos tho …
he said " im sure skating would be better on a lighter board " he asked if i could make a skate deck lighter …
so i made this a few days ago …its so light its mindblowing ,i weighed a normal deck of the same size it was 1600 grams , this one weighs 690 grams …
its a vacumn formed sandwich composite with a fibre re-inforced polyurethane ring around the rim …
when i was skating i kept digging rails when my wheels touched my deck and locked , i tightened the trucks as tight as i could but it kept happening , i got some truck raising blocks , but that felt like i was on stilts, i like the feeling of being closer to the ground , so i made wheel arches in the shape with a generous concave , so hopefully thatll keep it feeling low without the wheels grabing …
i showed my skate buddy , he was blown away by how light and strong it was , i said its made with the same construction principals as my boards , so after years of doing it , it was easy to get close to the mark first time …
hes gonna put some good wheels and trucks on it for me , hes off showing it to some friends , i said i dont wanna make them … he says " but youll make one for me right?" i say of coarse , he says " my brothers will want one to " …
what have i done ??? my buddy reckons this is to good for me ,i think im going to have to make another one coz i reckon this one will get claimed …
i ran a sugar deck like a sailboard , so it has grip but you can still see the grain…
concrete hurts , but its still fun …
cant wait to get back down there …
the kids at the skate park reckon its kool that an old guy would learn to skate …
stoked to be into it …
regards
BERT
Just be good to your knees. A lot of the skateboarders I knew in their youth play golf now.
I like the octopus eyes on that board. Very pretty wood. I’m 46 and sold one of my boards on consignment and used the money to buy a 48" skateboard. The last one I owned was a Logan Earth Ski in 1977. I live in hill country. Lots of empty hills to cruise on. Don’t tell my wife. mike
Kool Stuff Bert!!!
Surfings betta’ but when theres no waves, or its nighttime I like skatin’ well i refer to it as Surfing the street.
Happy Surfing,
Josh.

Is Bryan Bates of Seven Surfboards formerly Bryan Anderson? His photo on his website looks just like Bryan Anderson. His boards even look like Bryan Anderson’s style. And last I heard, Bryan was down working close with Lanny Schuler in Seaside. Is Bates his wife’s last name? Also, is Bob Turner still alive? I heard he wilsoned a few years ago. Henry Hester introduced me to him on a log at Shorties when he first moved up to Manzanita.
Love, Delbert de Von Pumpernickel
sorry holly, bryan bates has always been bryan bates…
as to bob turner, no he is dead, but he did leave his templates to danna williams to share with the oregon shaping community.
