I’ve noticed that some companies use pvc stringers in thier eps blanks and others use wood. Why the difference? Pros and cons of both? I’m not talking about popouts, I’m interested in the guys handshaping boards from eps blanks.
Wood and water don’t mix well. Wood is lighter than PVC and has nice stiffness but in a finished board flaws can actually undo some of the strength charateristics the stringer is there to impart. PVC is waterproof. No issues there. It is flawless in it’s makeup. Again, no issues. But it is a bit heavier.
I agree with Greg. However if one were to use better wood, milled correctly you would have a good stringer.Ash is a good candidate as is Sitka Spruce if you can get it.It needs to be milled so that the grain runs correctly.Time consuming for sure but not no biggie for someone who is a good woodworker.R.B.
