EPS Discoloration - Box Leak?

Noticed this discoloration near the fin box on my eps. I’m hoping someone will tell me it’s not water damage but is that just wishful thinking?

Doesn’t look like water damage to me…

Leaks into EPS that I’ve seen don’t have that dark, patchy, defined look… more of a gradual yellowing that’s darkest at the damged site, and fades as you get further away.

Also, water damage might feel squishy. How does it feel?

Finally… it’s unlikely that all four boxes would have the same “leak.”

I think it might be foam damage due to excess heating of the resin used to install the boxes, but that’s just a guess. Did it appear quickly after the install? Maybe the foam around the boxes melted AND water got in???

Strange…

Hrmm… did you use a filler for the box install? Qcell? microspheres? did some squish out onto the bottom?

Maybe put it in the sun and spread some soapy water around the boxes? Leaks will show as bubbling.

You should be able to find the point of water ingress, if your worried about it…

There has to be a visible crack for it get in there!

It could be quite small, but you’ll see it.

Seems strange it’s on more than one box, I agree.

I also agree that it’s probably something to do with not sealing the inside of the cavity before pouring resin in, or an overheating problem. Hopefully just cosmetic, and even if it has weakened it, it’s probably too much trouble to fix.

Surf it, and fix it if you bust a fin out, is my opinion.

If your boards not getting heavier, and theres no visible cracks, keep riding it!

Kit

i personally dont believe you need to use resin to set futures boxes in eps

unless you use inserts

i tried using sikaflex

it didnt heat up and is really strong

and theres a few other adhesives outthere as well

im sure there a few guys on sways that have or are using alternatives

it does look more like resin to me
