EPS/epoxy misconceptions/demonization: why?

I think I may try to make my first board with this stuff. I am not afraid of delam. I just want something as ding resistant as possible and without long waits to dry out the foam before repair when it happens. One added benefit of this product, one that has not been mentioned yet, is the wide assortment of foam colors…as long as you like blue, pink, or grey. It would be nice to get white foam though. I know there is “spyder foam” but I have huge issues with paying the unreasonable prices for this product.

I cannot add much more to what’s been said. Thanks guys, now I don’t have to write much. I have written a lot in these months and am hartened that it has been read and understood. Anyone who would like to contact me for info on Resin Research products can at, or 321-779-2369. Again thanks

Sluggo, Thanks for the heads up on MACT. Much better information than I had available.

Noodle, I am not saying that EPS doesnt work, quite the contrary.

Also, I was hoping for a better argument than the predictable “because you are not one of us you do not know what you are talking about”

I screwed my original post up royally. I called EPS XPS, and called XPS EPS all the way through it. Then I accused you of not knowing what you were talking about. If I can’t do any better than that, I’ll let actual living people explain the differences… which is not to say you were correct in asserting that XPS resists delam better. It doesn’t. If I could delete my original post without registering, I would. A few surfboard builders tried epoxy/XPS through the years, and wound up eating their costs because of delams. Generally these builders learned their epoxy/styro lessons and went back to making poly boards. A few of them even became internet crusaders against epoxy. If builders with a vested interest in poly board building were to convince resurgent epoxy/Styrofoam builders to build with XPS foam, an inferior board foam, epoxy surfboards would again develop a bad reputation among surfboard buyers. Poly board builders would retain market share. After making a few epoxy/EPS boards, I consider it a superior product to polyester/polypro. XPS hardly shows up on the board building landscape any more.

Thanks noodle, I would like to know how Point Blanks is doing. If the delam issue can be solved then that is really the only thing against it isnt it? I have worked with both types of foam and I like XPS much better as far as hot wiring, sanding and soforth. and it should be absolutely water tight in the event of a ding.

And I never said XPS resists delam better. I suggested it would make a much more ding resistant board that would not absorb much water when exposed than the standard of Polyester/polyurethane. I had no idea of the delam issues, but these are not apperent if you do not have 100 boards out there and 5 of them are returned to you with delams. I may have sounded overconfident in my assertions but I dont think I got any facts wrong. I know there are much better options than the status quo(polyester/polyurethane) and there is a lot of misinformation out there on the options. Some of this, probably much of it, is simple misunderstanding of the facts but I have a suspicion some of it is purposeful misinformation designed to maintain the intrests of those who do not want the satus quo to change.
