EPS Microballoon seal

I’m making my first EPS board, and I wanted to do a resin swirl on the bottom and lam the deck clear. I’m planning on sealing with epoxy and microballoons instead of spackle. I’ve read in several places that when sealing with spackle you need to tape off the stringer. Same with microballoons? I’d like to be able to see the stringer on the deck, but I don’t particularly care about the bottom as it’ll be covered.

Thanks

Well, Rachel, I’m an old PU/PE guy, but I can’t imagine any reason to mask off the stringer.

You might try testing on a foam sample with stringer. Microballoons add a white color to the resin but if you squeegee hard over the stringer, it might show through.

Dear Rachel

ok is a good advice from the moderator, but however, if the objective is to see the stick for aesthetics goals, I suggest to tape it before to seal and leave the perfect marriage between epoxy and wood to happen. Be careful taping the stick in the close line of junction, eps/wood or the air could scape by this point and may cause problems.

No need for the extra step of masking. As long as you clean up accurately, the stringer will show through with a slightly lighter tint at most. Structurally more sound too.

congratulations Rachel on ? being the first lady here to make an eps / epoxy board ?

bravo !!!

let us know how it goes eh ?

…and get your girlfriends into it too !

…you GO girl !!

cheers !
