I know we have a number of members here who live in various European countries. I have been following the news of the recent storm events there and have seen some impressive pics and video.
I’d like to see more images and hear some first hand accounts of what really went on.
Same in UK, very big, only the really sheltered spots any good, but they were smallish and very crowded. Plenty of sand washed out, so may be some interesting banks in a few weeks…lots of coastal damage and flooding. Have seen some great shots of Mullaghmore on magic seaweed, so any N facing coasts seemed to fare better…
French outer reef mythic Belharra was ridden by a number of people including Jamie Mitchell, Grant Baker and Shane Dorian. The swell was huge (although I had seen even bigger in the past, I think it must have been 1990) and it washed away part of the seafront in numerous places. In Biarritz, two people were swept out by a wave while walking down the stairways from the lighthouse to the beach (something crazy to do with such swell conditions). The guy made it barely out and was still in the hospital last I heard, the girl disappeared and her body has not yet been found. An estimated 8 meters wave roared into the Port Vieux creek, breaking windows and injuring a few kids who were there. A tramp who used to live there was reportedly washed out to sea and is still searched after actively. Still on Biarritz’ Grande Plage, waves went up the beach and into the casino building, inundating about 40 slot machines. In Guéthary, both restaurants standing on the Alcyons’ jetty were almost completely destroyed during the night. I shot the following photos at about 8.30 in the morning, as soon as there was enough light and I shot this sequence of a wave hitting one of them. Also included is a photo of Guéthary’s port with the jetty almost disappearing under water.
Ambrose, Greg Tate, Afoaf (not sure?), this WAS the restaurant where we had lunch when you visited some years ago…
Some more pictures… The first is a 15’ wave breaking outside Guéthary, the other is an outer reef breaking about 2 to 3 Km outside Bidart, shot with a 300 mm lens from Guéthary. You guess the size.
