European DVD's

Hey!

I’m traveling to eastern Europe next week and was going to bring some of my movie stash. Will they play on European DVD players?? I thought I remember something about the format being different.

Thanks,

Krokus

Many, but definately not all, EU DVD players are unlocked to play all regions. However, the TV should also be able to play NTSC as well as the EU norm. PAL. I’d give it a 25% chance. Don’t bring too many.

Thanks Rob!

What if I bring my little portable player?? I have 220 adapter and patch cords. I wonder if the TV’s have standard video/audio in jacks (Yelow/Red/White)?? Definitely won’t be surfing the Black Sea! I did see some waves in a picture I have though. Looks like Texas Gulf Coast! HA! Real cold! Sheboygan boyz could hang!

Thanks,

Krokus

welcome in europe

It depends on the TV even with the portable. Dunno if the yellow jack produces NTSC or PAL or a standard of it’s own output. New TVs usually supports both PAL and NTSC, but you may have to find a setting for it. Most DVD player are zone free. Even if it’s a hack, the shops usually does it for free and you still get the guarantee.

Håvard

Should be fine, most clued up people in Europe have un-locked DVD players (so we can buy our DVD’s cheaper and earlier from the US!).

My 20 year old TV and unlocked DVD player plays region 1 (US) NTSC format DVD’s no problem.

And if you want an unlocked DVD player in the US just search the Web. A few months ago Best Buy’s cheapest model could be unlocked with the remote in 4 keystrokes. Forget the brand but it cost about $35 and is a tiny little silver box.

Go get a China made DVD player , they read any types of DVD in the world …

All DVD players are made to play all zones, the protection is in the software. And the protection is a joke…

Hi Krokus, all you need is an all region DVD player capable of playing NTSC DVDs on PAL TVs, or easier: play your DVDs on a computer or laptop.

On the conectors, the classic red/white/yellow jacks or the S-VIdeo+audio (red+white) conector will work, but probably you’ll need to use a converter from those jacks to an “euroconnector” (about $3.00 on any shop).

Welcome to Europe!

Coque.

Great replies! Thanks to all.

So if I understand correctly there are two issues. The player being able to read the disc and the output to the TV matching TV input. I am going to buy an inexpensive one there and the output should be good for the local TV but I need to find one that plays all formats (unlocked) or capable of BEing unlocked. Sales people should know about this right? I will be in the Ukraine and not sure what is available.

Thanks again for the help. Any more suggestions welcome. I know voltage is 220 there for sure.
