No, Jimmy’s dad Uncle Jim and his Brother Michael both passed away. Jimmy is still Kolohe as ever, living in Kona. I think there must be a million stories about Jimmy. He told us a few good ones. We always have a good time at the family gatherings. He comes over and sits with my wife and I and we laugh so much. You can take us out of Ewa Beach, but you can’t take the Ewa Beach out of us.
Was Tommy Fernandez an Ewa Beach boy who lived on Papipi St? Was that George Kaholokula from down empty lots side? I knew him through Issac Tanaka. He used to surf out at Shark Country went it was good.
My wife is from Kaimuki, and she’s good friends with Dave Toma and Richard Natto. Toma Natto and Summer were right behind C&K, and Kalapana. I think that would be about 75-78 or so.
Sorry about the elder Jim Oxley, but glad Jimmy still alive and well! Last time I saw him was in Kona with Mel Behasa, and that was many moons ago. Next time you talk to him, ask him about "JAWS!" when him and I were diving the 100' ledge off Campbell Industrial Park in the 70s on Bennie Oasay's boat. I doubt either of us will forget that in this lifetime (or the other guys on the boat).
Yes, Tommy Fernandez from EB. His brother Kevin, and sister Jocelyn, who married Sylvester Suga (RIP). Tommy lives on Maui now, and still playing music.
I do remember them (TNS) from those days. That was great local-contemporary music era, for sure (but I still blast Gabby Pahinui when I get home sick:)
Hi guys! I see you guys mentionting my cousins…Tommy Fernandez & family. Tommy & Kevin both live on Maui and are doing real good. Jocie is still in Ewa Beach, & Gordon & Stephanie are on the mainland. :)
Howzit makakilo, Gladto hear things are all calmed down since things do get a little heated here sometimes but we try to keep it mellow and just help people by answering their questions so they can learn from our expierience and there is a lot of that on Swaylocks. You should have been here in the days of "he who won't be named"because he was a nightmare and luckally he is not around any more.Stick around long enough and you will see all kinds of strange stuff since we do have a few who like to stir the pot so to say. Aloha,Kokua
mahalo kokua, most everybody been supa cool. especially you, shark country, ewa beach rd. and the rest on this thread, so mahalo to you all! having said that, one thing i dont do well and that is take shit! never have aquired the taste, however in the interest of swaylocks' copasetic vibe i will be taking the good advice offered me and ignoring the extraneous noise! now lets please pray for a couple big south swells!? a man cannot live upon sandy beach shorebreaks alone!
Hey Makakilo, last year I was out at SC on a good day and after a while Issac Kaneshiro and some of his friends came out. That guy can still shred, I was blown away at what he was doing. I don't think any top pro could have surfed the place any better than he did that day. Good thing I was ready to go in cause those guys were tearing it up and I was only going to get scraps.
I've seen Gantz out there a couple of times. My brother told me who he was. He was really mellow and a nice guy, the surf wasn't as good so he didn't look as impressive as Issac did.

yeah, i agree. isaac has stayed really sharp and athletic. jason still rips, especially when inspired but yeah isaac is a killa! hes a classmate of ours, maybe a year younger than me. cool guy! i re-finished his bathtubs last year! there were some rippers from ewa beach in those days! guys like chad delgado, mike sears, greg apo, chet moleta and many more!
Howzit makakilo, I think most of us have a breaking point and I know I do but we are all different but you are amomg friends here and I for one am one of the first to step up and help a memeber/brother swaylockian and there are others here that will atest to that. Just the fact that I had to leave Kauai after over 40 years was amost enough to send me through the roof but the cancer ordeal has made it so for now I can't surf which is another thing that doesn't agree with my lifestyle either but we do what we have to do since the sun will rise tomorrow and another day will start and I will have to deal with it. Just take care and remember you are one of us and a real Sway guy won't mess with you at all. Aloha,Kokua
eh... wow thanks brother kokua! mean! i wont forget it. 2 be honest im 2 proud for my own good and let little stuffs bother me. i feel shame i even mentioned it. anyway, all pau. mahalo for the friendship.
shee i'm real sorry to hear that youre sick my friend. i wish i had some sage words of wisdom to offer... youll be in our familys prayers every night before we go to bed kokua! and liten to your docs!
Howzit makakilo, There is nothing wrong with being proud and I am very proud of the good things I do in life for people that are in need of help in one form or another. Life is hat we make it and I have tried to be as good a person as possible but there are times when we just have to let it go and vent but I try not to hurt anyone in the process since that is going to the dark side and I have been there myself since I grew up on the wrong side of the trracksand had to defend myself more than a few times. That is one reason I left and moved to Hawaii and it was the best decision I ever made in my life and hope to get back there some day in the near future. My health is better than it has been in the past and I have to thank all my s Sway brothers for their prayers and all the positive energy they sent my way when I was not doing very good during 2009 which was a bad year for me but I always had Swaylocks to brighten my day or night. I owe a lot to my brothers here and I hope that soon I will be able to get to traveling andmeet asmany a possible. Like I said before take care and remember you have us on your side and will watch your back. Aloha,Kokua
Howzit Ambrose. You were one of the first people I met on Kauai since the people who picked me up at the airport had to stop and get an avo sammy at your health food store and they were the best ever. You my long time friend have always had a smile on your face and been a great friend who I will never forget and look foreward to seeing again soon so we can talk story about what ever comes to our minds. Thank you for catching some waves for me and I can tell you arebecause there are days when it just seems lie I just got out of the water and not the lake. Take care and hope to see you in the near future. I alsomiss old mr grumpy and let him know I think about him all the time since he is such a great friend of both of us and we both know he doesn't just take to any body. Aloha,Wildog
Robbie McDonald and I were best friends. After all these years, I still miss him.
Charlie M's younger brother, Glen, and I were real tight. We walked to school together everyday. Charlie and I became good friends after he got back from Vietnam. We all surfed and fished and hung out together. Ewa Beach Road. Good place to be then.
Butch; Man, I haven't thought of Calvin Higa in a long time! Empty Lot regular, and one of the few guys from out-side Ewa Beach that no one hassled. And he had a REAL job, so usually had nice boards. He was a good surfer as I remember, but practically blind without his glasses. I think he used to watch for us scrambling outside, or to the left or right to know when and where a set was coming in. Also spent a lot of time sitting way outside waiting for a clean-up sets, and he managed to nail "the wave of the day" regularly. Ha! Very mellow guy.
Marshall Crumb and David Murakami; other names all but forgotten in my old brain. David picked us up on EBR and would drive us to school sometimes, and to Haubush side, and sometimes west shore or north shore on surf trips back in the earlier days before we had cars or licenses. I remember when you, me and Glen Mizunaka would meet at your house in the mornings and walk to school together. We'd stop by the get Frank and Roy Aragon on the way, sometimes hanging out in fort under his house. Steve Sage too, later on when he moved from Leeward Estates to EBR. Good memories!
A friend of mine has a son who's taken an interest in shaping along with a couple of his friends. He mentioned he met a guy named Marshall Crumb out surfing that designs clothes for Volcom and was riding his own shapes, short double ender twin fins, really killing it. Think that's the guy you mentioned in your post? They along with Marshall are looking to borrow my sweat box of a shaping room soon. Looking forward to seeing Marshall's shapes, possibly ask him to shape me one too.
Must be; how many Marshall Crumbs could there be in Hawaii? and Butch mentioned he was riding his own, unusually shaped small boards. Yup. I'd say that would be him.
