ewa beach late 60's

Aloha Squideye, I’m guessing your one of the Phillips boys. Sonny Cordes is my grandmother’s younger brother. In 1965, we moved back to Ewa and soon after my dad started taking care of the beach house. The Phillips family was doing that before we moved back to Ewa Beach.

I haven’t heard anyone mention Freckles (Jimmy Spencer), who was Uncle Sonny’s shadow. Never saw Uncle Sonny without Freckles.

Not sure which brother you are, but I married Jimmy Oxley’s cousin JoAnn, and I met one of you (the retired Fireman) at Uncle Jim’s or Michael’s funeral. Years ago, I knew Tommy, back when I worked for the TV station, he used to call me channel 2.

Reno and Cory were really good surfers. Cory and I were good friends until they moved out of the Ewa Plantation Park house.

Aloha gang! eh, sorry to go off topic just real briefly but.... HO! HOW WAS DAT SWELL!

hoping those that were on island got a few!

~Aloha!

I missed this one. We had our HS reunion week, so I was busy drinking and spending time with old friends. Are those shots of the west side?

yeh there will always b surf here in hawaii but reunion week with old friends...  anyway, sound like u had fun and the liver took cracks. lol! first and last pic are "hideouts". middle 2 are "free hawaii". bet shark country was roping!

Was kinda windy so I’m not sure how SC was. The wind kept me from going out when I had the time. Hoping for calmer days but I’m making a couple of boards to keep busy, so it’s all good.

Aloha brudda, Harry

we should meet up next swell? bring your brother too if hes down.

My brother and I tried to hook up in town last week and get some of the swell, but the timing was off. I’d love to ride SC at 4 feet again. Maybe this summer I’ll get a few days in. I usually ride town side so I can get in and out and still have family time.

Some of us Swaylocks folks are going to try and get together on August 13th, probably at White plains or one that side. That left looks awfully good.

Makakilo. These photos bring memories of perfect days to mind, surfing and otherwise. Thanks!

The below photo of a friend last week visiting from Florida. Did and outer-island surf trip and nailed this spot just about perfect. Cheers! from Bali.

WHOOOO-WHEEEE!! my goodness bradda! really nice! your buddy mustve really enjoyed himself! florida is pretty dismal right now. thanks for sharing, indonesia is pretty fascinating! so many miles of reefs and islands! living the dream, flow us a pic and an update every so often if can dude?

~Ahuihoooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuu!!!!

Yeah. There are some waves on these reefs, for sure. So many islands (18,000 of them here), so little time :-). Below from same break a day later.

aloha gentleman and happy faddas day!! ahuihou!

Sama-sama teman saya! (same to you my friend!)

aloha squideyes,

from your nickname, you should be tommy.  but i don’t think tom is the blog type.  rick was a cop so he had to type reports on a daily basis.  mike was a firefighter so i think he may had to type a few reports too (my bet to be squideyes).  tom was usually the one that reports were written about…but if it is you tom, who had the best ‘takoeye’ and desevered to have reports writted about his situations, my appoliges… you just don’t strike me as a blogger, but then i never thought i would be one either…this is my first time after 5 attempts… i tried to respond to you sooner but when ever i tried to post this it got kicked out as spam, pretty frustrating…

mahalo to all you ole time ewa beach braddas, long time since i thought of some names you mentioned…  let me throw one name for old time sake, as a board builder who was prettty  advanced for the kinda waves ewa beach had to offeR, DOUG SATO,

the bugga built some rockets.  any way thats enough for now.

a hui hou, i t

Phillips boys all dove. I know Tommy had a squid-eye reputation. Rick must have too, I think him and George Kaholokula, one of Rick's best friends, knew the reefs well; on top of the water and below. Mike too, probably. George used to make a mean tako curry! the guy had the eye. I saw him come out of the water once with 3 big tako wrapped around his body. He showed me how to tear the beak off so they wouldn't bite you, but hang on so you didn't have to carry them. Ewa Beach had some strong attitude!

I got my wife to partake in some tako poke, she went for it, but didn’t like the suckers sticking to her lips and tongue, doesn’t eat sushi either and she went to Aliamanu

Hi Gutrs, glad to see you got in. I remember a guy from Ewa Town named Doug who had a 1965 mustang GT fastback. He and Kimo Farm traded boards once. Doug made some nice ones. If remember he was an engineering student at UH back then. Is that the Doug Sato you mention?

I remember being in your quonset hut watching you work on boards and George Kaholokua would come by. Then years later I saw George playing music.

You and squideye, just playing wit us. Jus like da old hawaiian style. Neva give it away 2 fast. Keep um wanting more.

Aloha, Harry

Here's an old photo of the band Flight; Kane Ki'imi, Joe Siliado and George Koholokula, playing at Goony Hanagami and Jeanie's wedding back in late 70s. Good days / daze!

aloha sharkcountry, that’s the guy… he was very maticulas and fine craftsman… there were a few good board builders back then.  i actually saw my first board being made by nelson kang who striped an old ‘ten toes’ and reshaped and glassed it when they lived acrossed the street from sharkcountry. then there was dickie delong steve keer, jim green, rob mcdonald, dave cueva, george kaholokula and mel behasa and pioneer maker bonnie silva all started in ewa beach.  fred palmeria and terry adams were guys who first help me to make my first board creature.  gave birth to a few more creaters before i got the hang of it…  from the old days to the presant, mel behasa is still very active making boards in kona and doing a good job.  he  made boards for most of the  ewa contingency in kona like fred palmeria, mel concepcion, henry declue, bobby illaban, doug vogelgesang and many others in kona and mates on oahu.  i will try to get mel to join in our treads but i’ll need some help from some of you. he got turned on to swaylocks when he was visiting the phillips ohana with cousin jimmy oxley.  whenever we get together he is always the historian for me and he has alot of photos too.  he has a classic one of the ewa beach roads gang, herb pruse, mike g. cuava brothers, charlie m. cleigh eaton, george k. mike bell, nate moody, and many more,   you all will trip if he can post it…so boys he is reading this, call him in…

aloha, i t

Aloha Issac, go to this thread and on page 2 there’s a photo of me with the board I got from you. It should bring back memories. I was so young and naive back then that I didn’t understand the graphic you had on it as your logo. I thought it was a crab, but it wasn’t.

Maybe you could explain how you did the color on the bottom.

I’m glad you are adding your input here. Maybe Squideyes will come back and add more of his memories. What was the name of the family that lived on the town side of your uncle’s house at Shark Country? I think the mother worked at Ewa Beach Elementary in the cafeteria, and there was a son about my age who surfed.

FYI, I just sent a note and this link to Mel Behasa in Kona.
