where was i when that huli huli pua’a went on…that looks so ono!!! is that your dad cooking… that is a labor of love man lots of work to cook a pig that way but it is the best…i like it better than kalua pig…those were so good fun days…sonny cordes was good friends with my dad, they use to suck um up alot… aloha, i t
mel and jimmy was over at my place a few days ago… i was drilling them about dropping some lines on swaylocks… jimmys said the email to you was the most typing he’s done in years…mel said it takes him to long to type to get his message down…i kinda understand, up till a couple years ago i did’nt know how to get on the computer and my typing skills was back at campbell high school 1965…but its amazing how it comes back after you massage it a little…jimmy invited me and mel to his brother in law’s memorial service… he said sharkcountry and his ohana will be there we could reconnect…i don’t know if its prudent for us campbell alums to be reconneting at a punahou kine memorial service, especially since its jimmy’s sister’s husband memorial, in this situation its not a time to have fun since the deceased was not very old… not like when my dad died last year, it was a casual fun event, my dad was a 100 years old it was time for him to go everyone was happy that he live such a wonderful life…
mel’s third partying everyone. he said he going email me pictures of the’ ewa beach road gang’ and wants me to post it … we’ll see… till then, aloha i.t.
Yes, Nelson Oasay was the State yo-yo champ in the sixties and went on to Disneyland for the nationals. I took the Ewa Beach and leeward yo-yo finals the next year and made it to the state finals (Ala Moana Center Stage) but lost out when I was tied for first with this other guy. Nelson Oasay was the drummer for the band called the Imperials. Band members include Nelson Oasay, Henry AhHee, Clemet Kamelamela, and if not mistaken, Kenneth Olanolan (Aku). Ernie Bisol was my classmate and very good friend. He lived up the street from me in Ewa Estates. I occasionaly surf with him at times. Gary Ramos, Andy Byers, and myself used to hang out in school. Vickie Bale was a cutie and live further down Papipi Rd. from me. Approximately 3-4 houses before Pupu St. Tom McChessney surfed Shark Country also. I also see him occasionaly. He went to Vietnam as a medic however, not sure of the year. I went to Vietnam as an infantryman 1969-1970. Nelson Kang, Nelson Oasay, Anthony Gionson, Tom McChessney, Charlie Bell, and myself worked at the old Ewa Beach Foodland after school if there wasn't football practice at Campbell. I can't remember seeing the Matsushimas surfing at Shark Country, perhaps later with my brother Derrick. I could go on and on. I hope I answered some of your questions. Aloha, Mike
Corino was the name of his son who was about 5-6 years old at the time Reno was living at Haubush. Remember how nice the baseball field was? The Oasay family's front side of the house was on Ft Weaver Road and the garage side was on Pohakupuna Rd. Anyways, I can't open the picture attachments you sent being that this is a military computer (security). Please send these pictures to my home email if you will. hamon@hawaii.rr.com Aloha, Mike
For the record: It was myself and Rudy Oasay who had the blue 240-Z's, Andy Byers had the red one. We all bought at the same time and cruised Ewa Beach. Total price for the car new was $3,500.00 out the door. Big money then. Aloha, Mike
Yes to bad about Mike Oxley. he would sur Shark Country on occasions. He had a huge pink board with and outrageous scoop on the nose. I didn't know about Mary Oxley's husband. In my opinion, Mary Oxley had to be the most prettiest girl in the world back then. I'm sorry for her loss. Myself and Rudy Oasay had the blue 240-Z's. Andy Byers had the red one. I have 2 younger sisters, which one you talking about? Aloha, Mike
Trivia.... What was the name of Barneys Burger House before it was called Barneys? What was the name of Kam's before it was called Kam's? What store was there before the current 7-11 was built? What restaurant was there before the current Ewa Beach Fast Stop was built? What was there before before the current Pet Shop, Napa's, and Gemini car shop at the end of Ewa Beach shopping center was built? I could go on but I'll give you a chance to digest this. Aloha, Mike
we bought our house on ololani street in leeward estates around 1958-1959 at the time it was the last house in the development before they built the park. Then my pop got shipped out and we didn’t return till 1964 when i started at ewa beach elementary. I thought ewa estates wasn’t built here until they relocated the halawa folks to ewa beach when they built the stadium. i think some old timers think that was the start of the end of old ewa beach.
is there a fast stop?
i still remember getting my haircut at botane’s for a good portion of my life until he got too old (90’s) to cut it. I miss those old barbershop days.
french frys at woolworths or ice pops and dry red squid at tanaka store walking home from elementary school.
i would never have recalled that board if you didn’t show me the pic…your brother was more persistent than you so i seem to remember more of him…no offense to either of you…i’m flatter that you guys liked my boards as much as i did…to bad there were’nt more takers… i have just glossed my first solid woody made of vertical wili wili. looking at your picture, the shape is similar but my latest creature is about 20 pounds heavier (kinda like getting old) and 2 feet longer than the one i made for you… i have never sent a picture online before but i will make an attempt to. notice i’m still in a q-hut, waas up wit dat??
Wow! My wife’s brother Joe in the middle. Remember Kane walking around the crowd during breaks jokingly saying smoothly, “i"m in the band.” Is there a way to get this picture sent to me via PM? If higher quality, otherwise I just grabbed it from here. Mahalo for posting!
Hey Isaac, that’s a beautiful Wiliwili board. I love the way wiliwili looks. Sorry to hear about your dad. I didn’t think he was that old, but then today would be my dad’s 89th birthday if he was still around.
You guys should come over and keep Jimmy company during the service. I’m sure he’s going to be on the side at this one. Gary has touched so many people that we were told it will be very crowded. That might be a reason to not come.
I’ll try to grill him for some good stories to get online.
I think it would be cool to have a get together at SC if they ever get around to making a park down there. Maybe be should bug Haseko to put a plaque with the names of all the families and people who lived or hung out there.
when the state was forced cut down this tree at the entrance steps to iolani palace
my brother and I could only salvage just a hand ful of branches in our cars
My brother made this pig design using our compsand technique with wiliwili 1/8" thick strips on the deck and balsa on the bottom and I made a gg fish copy using bamboo mat on the deck and wiliwili strips on the bottom unfortunately we glassed mine in bamboo jersey instead of fiberglass and it ended up with a muddy finish so you couldn’t see the wiliwili as well.
i found it a more efficient use of the iolani palace wiliwili to use it as handles on these wooden letter openers using curly koa as the blade and wiliwili for the handles.
when epoxied it has to be one of the most beautiful woods with all its wormy texture just like natural balsa or agave.
but then I discovered that an even smaller piece of precious and rare wood could make an even more special and practical gift
I order most of my blanks from the big island from a fellow pen turner there. You could make 500-1000 of these pens with the amount of wood you’d need to make a single solid or hollowed out koa or wiliwili board. I’m currently stabilizing (epoxy resin infusing under vacuum) my wiliwili scraps to turn into turnable pen bodies. I sell them for fund raisers or give them away as gifts to friends.
Oh yeah. That was Rudy, not Bennie. And I remember Andy's red Z too. They were awesome cars back in those days. You guys rocked. $3,500 bucks? Gezzz. That's what a root canal cost now days!
Here's a few photos that Mel sent from Kona yesterday. Good days revisited! Mel used to take a lot of photos back then. Glad someone did! BTW, the photos came with this message. I"m still laughing!
Hey Ike and Mike........... Aloha Went thru the archives of Ewa Beach days and instantly got a sinus infection, still get cooties in 'em. After prying the pics off the yellowing and rotting photo albums, I tried to scan them on my HP officejet 6500 printer, scanner and fax machine - NEVA WORK= Bummas. Almost give up, but then I remembered I scored an Epson V200 photo scanner from my father after he died. Read the Help Menu and thrudged along. Anyway I think I did it with the help of my daugther and son . So if you no get this E-mail , dat means neva go tru.....Nah. Please reply if it works. I know I have more photos somewhere, but I have to get over my current hanabatas before I look for rest of them. Have fun......................Spock You Laytahs ...................Aloha , Mel
I got the photos and posted a bunch on this discussion. Hope Mel no mind! Good fun looking at them all!
Sorry about your Dad. May he RIP. But sounds like your dad lived a good, long life. It's the most any of us can ask for. 100 years old? Great! You'll be surfing til you're 90 (or more)!
Maybe see you in Ewa Beach soon! I'll send e-mail.
Hey Flagpoles. I didn't down size this photo, so I think it's as good as anything else I send, so grab from here probably okay. FYI, that picture was taken in Craig "Gooney" Hanagami's back yard at his wedding reception. Not sure of the date, but must have been late 70s. Flight was playing Top of the Shop on Kapiolani Blvd. regularly then, as well as a few other venues. They were great! Aloha!
