Love the photos. Thanks for posting them. Get a kick out of that shot of Clay. I remember how scary looking he was with all that hair and his big body.
I ran into Clay and Cal at their last Kamehameha reunion and I was shocked that Cal is the bigger of the 2. I didn’t recognize Clay because I hadn’t seen him since about '73 and all the hair is gone. We joked a bit about how the brothers were so intimidating when we younger.
You guys must have pioneered surfing at Campbells. All pre-leash days too.
You don’t need a scanner these days. Use your digital camera. Just make sure that you are lined up square and use a tripod. Watch out for reflections. I cut a hole in a piece of black cloth to stick the lens through and block out the reflections. For web stuff set the image quality to a low setting and you won’t have to mess with resizing.
Only my older sister and her husband still live at our house on Papipi Rd. Two of my younger sisters danced Hula. As for the shopping center from the Papipi Rd. side....the year was 1959. Barneys Burger House was originally called Tropicals. Barney's Burger House was next and was owned by Barney Arakawa, son of Goro Arakawa owner of Arakawa's store in Waipahu. Next was the Royal Pharmacy (I worked there with John Sadowski's sister), I believe the next was 1st National Bank, Sloop John B, Foodland (I worked there too), there was a bakery but it was attached to Foodland but was then later named Ewa Beach Bakery owned by Mr Foo. Next was Robins clothing and shoe store, and lastly was Woolworths with it's restaurant in the back. Oh yes, don't forget the Ewa Beach Bowling Alley and the Ewa Beach Teen Club. By the way, does anyone remember the Barbers Point Teen Club? Good thing we still have our memories......Aloha, Mike
I look forward to read the daily input. So much to remember and such and awewome time in my life. In addition to the pics that Mel dug up, the first time I surfed Campbells was with Charlie Mizunaka and David Murakami. We went to Makaha that morning to check, David was a lifeguard on that side and was into surfing big waves. It was too big for me and our boards were too small anyway, so we went looking around on the Westside. We ended up at Campbells, going down a dirt road and when we got to the ocean, there were good looking waves with no one out. Charlie was always ready to go for it, I was no sure, looks like shark area, no leash, no beach, no one out… Charlie was a charger, so out we go. He dad a beautiful Dick Delong squash tail, a magic board for me but it belonged to him. I had my trusty Rich Parr with the cut down fin so I could slide. First time of many go outs there. For us that was like our own personal North Shore wave. Seen a lot of crazy things happen there.
nice one bradda butch. aloha, im rusty. grew up in makakilo, grad campbell class of nineteen ninety. funny coincidence im at campbells now. alot has changed here. parking lot, lots of people coming and going. lots of rubbish. miss the days when there was no one around and it was clean. say… is this the same butch… cyrils brother… know u from brbs pt o beach looooooong time ago. aloha gang.
Makakilo, This Butch is Butch Perreira, a big time local hero for us Ewa Beach guys. Butch was a standout at Sunset and Laniakea in the 70’s, and a north shore underground charger.
Are you talking about Cyril Huddy? Cyril grew up down Ewa Beach with us younger guys, then moved to Waipahu. If you see him, tell him Bernie and Harry said hi. His cousins lived in the house next to the road where Joey Gaynor lives now. That lot used to have several houses on it.
Cool pictures, hope people continue to post. I think I recognize Herb Pruse in the lower right hand corner of the Ewa Beach Rd photo? And all the talk about surfing Campbell's. I remember taking off on a wave there and having a coral head sucking out of the bottom of the wave. Dry land is not something you want to see five or six feet below you while dropping in. I went diving out there on a calm day and then fully understood how that can happen. Not sure how those pillars formed, but they were topped with manhole sized coral heads and spread out over a large area. I was just starting to use a leash back then, can't imagine losing my board in those rocks on the shoreline.
Surfed Campbells back in the early days of leashes when we used to drill a hole in the back of out skeg and tie 1/4" nylon rope to the board. I had a leash wrap around my ankle out there on a good sized day and when the board pulled it just about broke my ankle. The wave was so strong it broke the leash and I had to swim to get my board. It also put a nasty cut through the rail. I had a black and blue line completely around my ankle and had a hard time walking for a couple of days.
Never surfed out there enough to see dry reef, but I have surfed at Publics when the reef was out of the water and you’d be riding high up in the wall to keep your skeg from hitting the rocks, you are dodging the rocks then you get over it and it’s OK. But you have to get back over the reef to get back out and that could be a problem.
Hey Sharkcountry. You are one akamai guy! Thanks for the photo tip vs scanning. Will try that next time! But for now, I scanned this album cover. Spike Kalapana is none other than Steve Kendall, who lives in Pahoa and makes occasional albums with various local talent in the area. Some of it is good! In this 1965 photo, album cover: Kauai when the youngsters went over for a surf contest: Mel B, Kane K, Chan K, David C and Steve K. Notice the Primo Beers. Not sure what Mel was drinking out of the conch shell. :-)
Hey powdercoat, I don’t remember her name but she must be just about 50 now. She was dancing hula way back then. Does your family still live on Papipi?
Corey and I were really good friends back when we were in elementary school. Corey was a heck of a surfer too. He was so small and he could ride on anything regular or goofyfoot. We had so much fun back then. That park was always kept in good shape. We used to practice little league there.
I remember the tasty freeze where Joey Gaynor’s sister’s Vicki and Debbie worked. They’d give us free ice cream cones every now and then. And they were pretty too. The owner had that pink '57 T-bird.
Barney’s (the grease pit) had the 5 hamburgers for a dollar special on Fridays.
Tanaka store had those little cups of frozen juice or soda with the popsicle stick for 5 cents.
I remember the shopping center from Papipi St side as Barney’s Burgerhouse, Royal Pharmacy, First National/Hawaiian Bank, Territorial Savings or something like that, Sloop John B restaurant, Foodland, Foo’s Bakery, Gee’s Jewelry, and Woolworth.
Hey Mike, cool photo. Primo had that low profile bottle. My Aussie friend says the new primo is OK, but I haven’t tried it. He says " it’s one of those beers you can drink all day". Crazy Aussies love beer.
Should be seeing Jimmy Oxley tomorrow. My mom has albums with photos from our little kid days. Nice to see the older guys starting to add their input. Maybe Barry Morrison can add something, I bet he’s reading this thread. I’ll ask him next time I see him. Maybe the Eaton brothers too. Cal moved back to Ewa recently.
Whatever happened to Gooney? Is he still in Hawaii?
Hozit sharkcountry, I remember drinking those old primos and I also remember th headaches from drining them. When I forget who bought them out and started making a new primo it was a better beer without the headaches and that was in 75'. Can't imagine what this new one tastes like but I am going to make a run to Vegas to go to the Hawaiian food store and I bet they will have it there so I'll get a sixer and try it and critic it. Aloha,Kokua

eh shark country, thanks dude, this cyril had a brother named butch. and i remember cyril just ripped barbers point like no one else. hed get these waves all the way from waaay outside and just killin um all the way to the beach on these egg looking boards. i knew a chick with the last name huddy. had a brother named kaina... rode a harley... cant remember sistas first name. DAMN short term memory loss sucks! lol!
Tonight I saw Jimmy Oxley at his brother in law’s funeral. He might come aboard and add some fun stories, but he’ll be away for a few days, so I don’t know what will happen when he gets home.
I also met John Sadowski and Ronald Gionson, both are Jimmy’s family friends. I was thinking these 2 were haole or maybe haole looking, but they are true bruddas. Local as can be, and both in good shape. John said he’s back on Ewa Beach Road at his mom’s house and surfing Lots with Ron. We told John about swaylocks and I hope he has a chance to check this thread out.
Luckily I was sitting with auntie and Jimmy because Auntie Eleanor remembered everyone, and told me who they were. They were with their wives. Was an honor to meet these 2 and John was so nice and humble.
Thought Mike Phillips might show up, but if he did we missed him. There were so many people that it was a problem.
This thread may have a chance to get really interesting with stories from the original crew. Barry, where are you?

aloha sharkcountry, John Sadowski is a very good athlete. he went to waipahu high school cause back in the day ewa beach did not have any schools. you started at ewa school then went to waipahu high school. as a matter of fact waipahu high school was the high school for all of waianae to foster village. thats why waipahu use to be such a power house in football…going back to John, he was an allstar football half back, basket ball, and track champ, not to mention finalist in the makaha surf contest. we were in the same judo club which my uncle was the instructor and john was one of the top students…his youngest brother practically duplicated John’s sucess. Stan Sadowski started at campbell high in the 7th grade but was recruited by punahou and iolani to play football. Stan choose iolani even if punahou was the dominant school at the time. well ended up in those fallowing years iolani became the winning team and by the time Stan became a senior, they had won the ILH championship. another Sadowski was Bumbum who was my classmate. Louis was the eldest brother i believe. according to powdecoat they had a sister which i was never aware of. she must have been the eldest…another hot surfer from ewa beach road was Lester Enamoto. anyway i kinda rambling on but if my memory serves me right, John was Mike Oxley’s classmate who is a couple years older than his sister Mary. like powdercoat mentioned in a earlier thread, she was a beautiful and caught the attention of older and younger alike…the only guy i know that didn’t rave bout her was Jimmy…by the way i’ve known jimmy since the fourth grade at ewa beach elementry school. he was born 16 days before me. we will be digging real deep if any of these guys join in swaylocks…
