Elsie sure could whip out some mean chow. just so happened evening time around 5:30 -6:00 i would be @ the door. then somebody would say come inside, anyway our family was very close to their’s. and sandra-ann now is a sucessful attorney along with Roberta as 4 Cecelia i don’t no. . Bra i think old Gary -boy must be a millionaire with all that profit sharing he got after retiring from Standard Oil. Steven & Barney i don’t know & Dougie probably 1 more $$$$$aire . Aloha T.P. T B C
By the way, if you go on You Tube, type in “Meet Evan Mock” and theirs a 1:38 clip of him skateboarding that will backup what I said. His father makes surfboard fins under the name of Island Fin Design; been making real good fins for a long time.
I hope when we have this reunion that some “young guns” go too; to see and appreciate that “real old style” if you know what I mean.
to be continued…

Like I said not too long ago, SQUIDEYE, YOU ALWAYS WERE AND STILL ARE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY! You definately keep this site rockin’ and rollin’! By the way Squideye, what if any of these wahines should read some of this stuff; would they come looking for you…
Speaking of Wong’s gas station, I worked there during the gas shortage times. I’d get to work and there would be lines of customers already waiting to get “rationed” amounts of gas. My first day of work I accidently put motor oil into a customer’s trans by mistake and Mr. Wong made me use a little hand pump to remove the oil out. He was pisssted at me, but didn’t fire me 'cause of the long gas lines!
Dabouy, I loved your skateboard story. At Raging Isle Surf Shop where I work, we’ve got a good line of different types of skateboards and skate stuff that we sell. Longboard cruisers and the regular skateboards the “young guns” use at their skateparks. In the country we’ve got a skatepark called “Banzai” 'cause it’s just accross the street from the surfspot Banzai, which is between log Cabins and Off The Wall. And the kids that skate there are UNREAL! My friend’s son, I think he’s only 12 years old, Ewa Beach guys would love his smooth style. His name is Evan Mock; he makes it look so easy.
Tommy is the Wong service station, the Chevron station? Gary Wong was a friend when I was young. I always wondered what happened to him.
Tommy I bet you had plenty fun with Lisa E. The Dias family is close to our family. Donald and my dad were close friends. Kinda sad that he is bed ridden. Darrell Dias was another SC surfer. Died too young. He used to come out and surf with shoes and ride on his knees after his first motorcycle accident. I think he died from another bike accident.
Aloha.
S.C.- yup as the one, when U said Linda is or was married to 1 O ’ Reilly boys, i remember her seeing her a few times over here. Rose Kam’s younger sister Roberta was her c\m too, along w/ 1 of the Dias girls. funny thing everytime i think or hear the name Roberta the Wong sisters come to mind. Wong’s lived couple homes in the loop from us . mr Wong had the 1st service-station in E.B. they started off where fast stop is now then moved to the other place. i know guys like the Kahu, Paul Shepard, ike & few others would remember Murray Castro & Doc Kang along w/ the infamos Ralph " savage " Moniz as employee’s Aloha T.P. as Frank Aragon would say to be continued.
Off the top of my head. Butch Perreira, Frank Aragon, Robbie Husic (RIP). Robbie’s mom Jan and dad Bob were organizers of the surf club I think.
tanks for replie
we’re still there ololani st gang and all.
david ontai is the most infamous ololani st local and we’re probably not too far behind. Been there since the late 50’s early 60’s.
depending on how far back you want to go, there’s a bunch starting with John Skedelski in the early 60’s the name sake of John’s.
Alot of the old crew came from the Ewa Beach Park side of the neighnborhood were most of the old families lived like the Silva’s of SIlva store. Ewa Beach road is now one of the most drug and gang infested here. That’s were Karen B was raped and killed by her 17 year old micronesian neighbor. But then everyone still living in old Ewa beach is surrounded by drug dealers and pit bulls.
Robbie Husic was a classmate from Ewa Beach Elementary and was our greatest hope for a pro back then but died of an overdose in his teens. He was an early version of another great goofy foot who also died a too early death riding his motocross cycle in the hills over north shore.
Butchie, Dickie DeLong, the Gardner brothers, the Aragons, Kimo(Chris) Greene, caveman, the Crouch brothers, Isaac Tanaka, Coreno Abella the original live in caretaker of Haubush Park. Tommy Phillips and his brother were pretty notorius back then as was Gene Okumura who did his dues for his drug addiction. Allot of people have left but there’s still some of the old families around. Some have come home for one reason of another like me.
Our families were blessed to have beach houses going back to the 1930’s on the beach fronting Sharkcountry and the original Haubush breaks. Our families lived, fished and surf those water for close to half a century till Campbell sold all the cane land to Haseko for the new Ocean Point/Ernie Els golf course development and marina.
It used to be a hidden gem at the end of a dark and lonely canefield road now most of it is just another zero lot zoned yuppied occupied residential area. Not a real neighborhood like it was any more just another zip code.
yep, some history there,
it was outlaw then, i can't even think of whats whats now
i guess i was going to chris gardner for fun and games

James, we are an original owner of a house on Ololani street. Probably only us and the Ontais left. Don’t rememebr an african american surfer from our street, but theres a bunch of mixed races that might look like that. Might be the Abelinado ? family, Frank Aragon could pass as african american, but he didn’t live on our street. The african guy might be Butch ?, the guy who was glassing for Gooney Hanagami’s Sunboards. Gooney was the first of our age to shape boards, all the other guys were a little older.
Shark Country crew late 60’s included the following families, Bacalso (Tony, David, John, Randy?), Kauihou (Kimo, Scott) , O’Reilly (HF, Tom, Sean, Maria, Patrick, Peter), Gaynor (Harry, Joey), Arioli (Ron, David), Crouch (John, Jonathan), Helms (Beauford), Okamura (Gene, Dale, Jon), Rust (Kenny, ?), Grier or Greer? (Randy, Ricky), Hanagami (Gooney, Keit), Inoshita (Lee), Tanaka (Isaac), Kahalekulu (Mark, Kevin, Sterling), Alama (Bernie, Harry, Kathy), Farm (Kimo, Kevin, Kyle, Auntie Gladys), Mattson (Mike, Matt, Billy, Uncle Bill), Mitsiasu (Myron, Jon), Chevalier (Mike, Sam) Mederios, Santiago (Randy, Glenn), Vogelgesang (Mike, ?), Husic (Robbie), McCafferty (Timmy and sisters), Hanaoka (Scott, Ross), Neid (?, Mike, Jenny, Chris), Tornquist (Bruce), Ontai (Leonard, David, Jofee), Thompson (Rex, Alvin aka mouse), Debbie Bowers, the Wongs, Oyamas and others like Ralph ? and his brother.
With the exception of the Farms, and the Mattsons, these are all kids we grew up with in the area just east of the Beach rd. We all played in the shore break as kids then started surfing inside Shark Country and Haubush before hitting the outside break at Shark Country.
The older guys were the Phillips, Oxleys, Gardners, Aleveados, Gotos from Ewa town. The Eatons and Kaholokuas from empty lots side. There’s the whole Parrish clan from the middle of Ewa Beach (Parrish Drive). They had their own canoe club. There are even older guys like John ? (not skedelski) who in the first Ewa Beach Surf Club, Barry Morrison, who owns the Inter-island shop, and a bunch from the early 60’s. I know some guys from Ewa town, surfed there a lot but I don’t know their names, just the faces.
Robbie Husic was a regular foot, and an incredible surfer, his Mom, Jan started the HSA to help Robbie get into contests. Ewa Beach has had a lot of really good regular foot surfers, like Robbie, Butch Perreira, Kimo and Scott Kauihou, Mike Vogelgesang, “Gooney” Hanagami, Harry and Joey Gaynor, H.F. O’Reilly to name a few. There theres Frank Aragon, Mike Chevalier, Tony Bacalso, John Crouch, David Arioli, Mark Kahalekulu and others who were really good goofy foot surfers. I’m pretty sure all of them had their days at Pipe, while us regulars had Sunset, Laniakea and Alii beach.
I remember one day in either 74 or 75 out at big Laniakea with a small crowd. Mark Kahalekulu and I went out and there was Butch and Frank just killing it. I was kind of awestruck by Frank’s smooth backside approach to this incredible wave. I think he was one of the first guys that wore speedos surfing. That was one of the best days I ever had surfing Laniakea, maybe 10 guys out at the most and everyone getting waves every set. Taking off near the houses on the Waimea side and kicking out outside the houses on the Haleiwa side.
Chris was a trip. A wildman. One day we were down at the beach house filling sand bags and Chris comes driving in with one of my classmates from high school. He’s all speeded out and he grabs the shovel and starts filling bags at three times the speed we were going. Just a wild and crazy guy. Always fun, but I’m sure he was a handful if you were on the wrong end of it all. To my knowledge all 3 brothers are dead. Steve was married to Anela Sunn, Rell’s sister. Rell told me he was a sh t. The youngest brother was also a trip. He would wear these string things for men. Just a sack to stick your thing in and string that wraps around your waist. One day he comes down to the beach just as we set out to lay a pai-pai fishing net. When all us kids jump in to splash water, he drops his shorts and jumps in wearing his man thong thing. We didn’t catch any fish that time and all my uncles were ribbing him saying that he scared the fish away with his thing. He and another guy named Brutus wore those silly suits. My uncles were making us all laugh with their wise cracks, and it helped us get through cleaning all the limu from the nets.
So many people hung around Shark Country/Haubush back then. It was a great time to live there.
i'm just floored with all the info there,so many names cause little ? in my head.
thanks for the info
jim
just for the lack of anything else to do,
got a pinch nerve in my neck which has me house bound, i think the house was 91 ololani,
looking at it on mapsgoogle street view it looks nothing like 69' but things change
tanks for trip down the old ways and times
jim
James if you tell me about where you lived on the street, and what kind of car you had, I bet I’ll remember who you are. FYI… all the houses in Ewa Beach have an address that starts with 91-xxx.
2 other guys I forgot, Tim Tucker, and Andy Mieko?. Andy went from riding a kneeboard to being a contender on the pro level. He and Debbie Bowers were the ones from our gang that went all the way to the pro level.
Come to think of it, you may be thinking of Blackie, he was my brothers classmate in elementary school, but he moved to Makakilo, he and a guy named Wooford, would come down from Makakilo and surf at Shark Country. Then there’s the Langley family, Eli started the Koa Puna Bike club, the Dias family, McClungs, Andos, they all near each other. The Cranston brothers were part of it. There was also the Palmerton boys, Billy, Kevin and Snoopy. Snoopy was a good friend. Across the street from them lived a hapa haole goofy foot Glenn McKimi or McKinney, with 2 really good looking sisters, one was named Pam.
So many people from back then. All fading in and out of memory.
oh sorry, i was a "foster freak" (foster village) and knew chris gardner through his girl friend polly bass , she went to radford high as i did
Jim, Radford had quite the crew and Foster Village was the upper limits of surfers, Paul Nehei, Steve Allport and his brother, Lani Keoho, me being from Hickam, I got a lot of ribbing.
But Radford was a place I’ll never forget or regret, Harold Jones, big brother to Booby Jones, Robby Cahill, got in the Ram Page riding Waimea, Ted Asmus, Rick and Kevin Johns, Rick died surfing just west of Waimea, Kent McIntosh rescued from Waimea while body surfing, swam outside the line up to drop a duece and was swept up by the rip.
In the late 60’s I went to a house in the woods in Rhode Island, who came to the door, Mikal Perry, she had married a guy in the coast guard, Rick Martell. last year I went to her fathers funeral at Ft. Rosecrans, he was the former commander of the Pacific fleet while she attended Radford.
I spent all my years there on restriction because of miserable grades, all I wanted to do was surf and build boards, I kept shooting myself in the foot, the old man would have given me anything if I had only paid attention to my grades.
But in the end, I brought him around to my side of the equation, he saw it was my life’s ambition and he got on board with me, 45 years later, 3 time US champion and 2009 Billabong art of Shaping winner.
Ka Po’e a’ea
Howzit sharkcountry, And I thought my memory was good, you should write a book about those days. Aloha,Kokua
